Question 1

Explain what you understand by conjunctions and write 5 examples in a sentence

Conjunctions

A conjunction is a word class that connects or links phrases, words or clauses and even sentences to give clearer meaning. Conjunctions are simply the words that serve as connection between two words or group of words. They help to coordinate words and make them more meaningful. Without conjunctions, sentences may seem irrelevant or meaningless.
Common conjunctions include: And, As, Neither, Nor, Either, Or, Yet, For, Because, etc.

Examples of conjunctions in sentences

  • She got what she wanted but she wasn't satisfied
  • Neither Tara nor Serah realized the game he was playing
  • I am not coming because I have work to do
  • My sister and I always go for a walk
  • I work more than my siblings yet I'm never appreciated

From the above sentences, we see that without the conjunctions attached, the sentences may make less meaning or become difficult to understand.

Question 2

Explain the types of conjunctions and write 3 examples for each one

Types of conjunctions

There are three main types of conjunctions and they are:

  • Coordinating conjunction
  • Subordinating conjunction
  • Correlative conjunctions

Coordinating conjunction

The work of Coordinating conjunction is to connect two parallel or independent words and phrases and turn it to independent clauses.
They are used for connecting words, phrases or clauses in a sentence .

There are 7 correlating conjunctions and each of them has a unique function.

Correlating conjunctions can easily be remembered using the word:
F
A
N
B
O
Y
S

FFor
AAnd
NNor
BBut
OOr
YYet
SSo

For can be used the same way we use since it because. It is used to explain the reason for something.
Example:

  • I do not go to school For I have Covid.

The above sentence can be replaced with Since or because and they explain the reason for something.

And - used to combine sentences or words.
Example:

  • The man slapped the lady and she, in turn retaliated

Nor- it is used to combine phrases that are untru.
Example:

  • She is not in her room nor in the market

But- used to express exceptions
Example:

  • We had nothing but a pair of shoe

Or- used to choose between options
Example:

  • Will you go with mother or me

  • Yet - is used to express unexpected things
    Example:
She works hard yet she never gets rewarded

  • So- is used to show consequences of actions.
    Example:

  • She was afraid of the snake So she refused to go through the forest path

Examples of correlating conjunctions

  • I will not meet him for he has nothing to say
  • Sara wants to go to the party but cannot
  • David is a man of integrity but women deceived him

Subordinating conjunction

Subordinating conjunction is a word that that serves as a connection between dependent clause. They are also known as subordinators. They usually consist of single words such as Because, before, When*. They can also include more than one word. For e.g, as long as, as far as, except that, even though etc.

Example of subordinating conjunction in sentence

  • Meet me in my office before leaving for school
  • I'll sweep the house When I Come back.
  • The principal summon the student because she was accused as a thief

Correlative conjunctions

Correlative conjunctions are words that work in pairs to connect two parts of a sentence, phrase or words. They are also called team conjunctions because they always come in pairs.
Correlative conjunction include the following:
Neither/nor, not only/but, either/or, not/but, both/and, such/that, as many/ as, etc.
