Give the definition phrases and five examples
Phrases are group of meaningful words that add meaning to a sentence.
It is different from a sentence because it does not contain a subject, verb or predicate.
A phrase has meaning when it is alone but it cannot be said to be a complete sentence.
Examples of phrases
- A sharp contrast
- Once in a while
- In my lifetime
- The Landowner is here
list and explain in your own words, the types of phrases we have and include two examples each.
Types of Phrases
The following are the types of phrases we have:
- Noun Phrase
- Adjective/Adjectival Phrase
- Adverb/Adverbial Phrase
- Verb/Verbal Phrase
- Infinitives Phrase
- Prepositional Phrase
- Gerund Phrase
- Participle Phrase
Noun Phrase
This is the type of phrase that has a noun or pronoun as its main word and also served as a noun in a sentence.
Examples
- I bought a house for my father inlaw
- The little girl goes to school only on mondays
- The happy song was sang by the girl
Adjective/Adjectival Phrase
This type of phrase acts as an adjective in a sentence. It describes/modifies a noun/pronoun in a sentence.
Examples
- The handsome intelligent boy was arrested by the police
- The black widow did her best in the show
- The crazy lady danced all through the day
Adverb/Adverbial Phrase
This type of phrase plays the role of an adverb in a sentence. Just like an adverb, the adverbial phrase describes and modifies a verb, an adjective or another adverb in a sentence.
Examples
- I was here yesterday
- The lady screamed very loudly
- He sounded so profoundly
Verb/Verbal Phrase
This type of phrase contains the main verb plus an auxiliary verb in a sentence.
A verb phrase combines itself to a noun or a noun phrase to form a sentence.
Examples
- Mother is making us an orange juice
- The family is trying very hard for them
- Zack might marry the girl
Infinitives Phrase
Thus type of phrase begins with the infinitives from of a verb i.e to plus any complement or modifiers.
This type of phrase can also function as either a noun, an adjective or adverb in a sentence.
Examples
- To leave the house is the only thing teenagers think of
- To read is very important for everyone
- To walk through the desert takes a long period of time
Prepositional Phrase
A prepositional phrase is a group of words that contains a preposition, a pronoun, object of the preposition, or a modifier of the object.
Examples
- The family was sitting by the tree
- There is some wine in the fridge
- She lost the baby at the beach
Gerund Phrase
A gerund phrase consists of a gerund (verb + ing) or a modifier or object that is associated with it.
Examples
- She is playing with the kids
- Swimming is my favorite sport
- Trying is always the best
Participle Phrase
This type of phrase contains a participle either her past or present and also a modifier in the sentence and it functions as an adjective in a sentence. It is usually separated by commas in sentences.
Examples
- With skipping ropes, glory exercised her arms.
- Shulamite, as beautiful as she is, gave way to tears
- The man, filled with anger, gave up his life
