Poor Attendance Issues

With student resistance I would like to start with the topic of poor attendance from students. Part of the battle when it comes to learning is showing up. Students who do not show up for classes miss out on learning and knowing what is going on in class. At the college and university level, a missed class could be bad as some teachers and professors may have lessons that are not available online.

Some students adopt a strategy where they think that the time missed on skipping a class can be better used for studying, doing homework, or going through learning materials for a different course. I guess this can work if there is very little information gain from the classes if the teacher is not an effective teacher. But still, it is better to go to class to see what is covered in the course.

There are times when students are not able to attend class due to illness or injuries. Students would have to catch up on their own with their learning. Sometimes tests and assignment due dates are moved to another day to accommodate for missed day.

Low Effort & Low Focus Cases

Showing up for class, tutoring sessions, learning sessions is important but it is not enough. Students and learners do need to be mentally present and ready to learn and participate. It is a bit of a waste of time to show up for something and not put much effort in learning. It could be better to not show up instead of putting in low effort in a class.

There are instances where a student could be tired or unable to do well during a session. This is understandable as it unreasonable to expect a high level of effort when the student is not able to do so.

Ways Student Resist Learning

There are all kinds of ways that students can resist learning. These ways can occur in an in-class environment or in an online setting.

  • Not showing up

  • Sleeping in class

  • Doodling / drawing pictures instead of taking notes

  • Being away from the online class

  • Choosing not to interact with instructors online

  • Playing games online during class

  • Phone texting during class

  • Conversations not related to learning

  • Taking too many breaks

Some of the items on the list above can be habitual. If so, some of these habits can be hard to break. Some teachers may be strict and direct those to not be distracted, put the phone away, etc. Some may not be as strict as the students themselves are responsible for their own learning.

Good Teachers Unable To Help Difficult Students

Teachers and educators do their best to help students learn and grow. What if a student just does not want to learn at all? No matter how good a teacher is there are times when the teacher is not able to help a student with learning. A difficult student could be someone that just does not want to learn. This type of student may see learning as not interesting, useless or something that is just not fun. There could be other issues that the student is facing that would be more important than school.

Thanks for putting up this post...it quite informative and educative. @maqbool12

Thankyou

Interesting viewpoint.

If I were to give this a one word summary: motivation

Yeah, I know. The motivation guy talking about motivation. Just hear me out.

Much of the behaviours you have described can, in one way or another, be attributed to motivation. To be more specific, the motivation to not learn (ie motivation to do anything else other than learn) is higher than the motivation to learn. And this drives behaviours in the various ways you have described.

Perhaps, one viable solution could be to manage motivation in order to drive the behaviours that result in learning.

I'm curious to know what you think...

thank you for your love
