"The Determination Of Refractive Index Of Fats/Oils".I hope you will like that, and happy to see my skill.
So let's start,
Refractive Index:
"The ratio of the sin of angle of the incidence to the sin of angle of refraction is called refractive index or index of refraction which is donated by n,"
n=sin i /sin r
i= Angle of incidence
r= Angle of refraction
Refractive index is of great value in checking identity and purity of fat.It decreases with an increase in amount of saturated fatty acids in sample. Refractive index various with temperature and wavelength.
Determination Of Refractive Index:
Refractive Index of fats is determined by Abbe Refractometer. Abbe Refractometer contains one fixed telescope and two matched prisms.
Principle Of Refractometer:
When light rays moves from one medium to another at an angle, it changes its direction. The refractometer works using the principle of light refraction. When light passes from air into liquids, it slows down. This phenomenon gives a bent look.
Procedure:
- Place the sample in contact with prism .
- Adjust the telescope to focus.
- Rotate the prism through an angle to parallel the light passing through prism and sample to the telescope.
- This angle of emergence determines the refractive index which is noted on scale.
