Greetings to all!
I present my second task of the Graphic Design course, in which this time it was assigned by @lhorgic, and it is related to Illustration.
It should be remembered that this Graphic Design course aims for participants to acquire and develop skills in the area of design and image creation, thus managing to support their publications with quality images created by themselves.
As part of this task, some questions have been left for the students to answer.
Define illustration in your own words
The illustration can be said to be an image which is used for the transmission of visual ideas, product publication, or to bring a brand to the center of attention depending on how creative you are with it.
That is, it is nothing more than a drawing or image that accompanies a text or document in order to complement it, to facilitate communication with the user of the product.
In short, the illustration is a drawing or artistic expression, which has an informative purpose, used to communicate visually. Illustration is intended to clarify, illuminate, decorate, or visually represent written text, regardless of gender.
Mention and explain other types of illustration not captured in this lesson.
In the assignment of this task, some types of illustrations were explained to us: editorial, advertising, fashion, infographics, and packaging. Below I will show you some of the other types of illustrations that exist.
Illustration of letters or lettering.
It is one of the best known and most used types of illustrations; it is the art of drawing the letters; It is therefore about creating new letter designs, either manually or digitally. This type of illustration is widely used for comic book projects, books, advertising banners, logo creation and other uses.
Humorous illustration or cartoons
It is a type of illustration that addresses topics of any kind, but humorous and exaggerated. They are also known as cartoons. This type of illustration is widely used in newspapers to deal, mostly with political issues, but there are also magazines devoted entirely to these types of illustrations.
Portrait illustration
They are portraits of people made by hand, using pencils or through programs such as Adobe Photoshop. Like many other types of illustration, they have been adapted over time and, today, there are digital portraits that bring a special interest to this type of illustration.
Technical illustration
This type of illustration that accurately describes an object to make it easier to understand; In other words, it is about representing technical concepts through illustrations. They are often found in instruction manuals, when we must assemble an object, piece of furniture or utensil.
Map illustration
This type of illustration has evolved over time; since previously they were indispensable to travel or to know new places; Today, thanks to technological advances and the applications that are available to us, these types of illustrations are no longer strictly vital.
Vector illustration
They are digital illustrations, by means of which figures and shapes can be created, starting from vectors programmed by coordinates. This type of illustration allows you to create designs with almost exact precision, and increase, decrease and modify the size of the illustrations while preserving the quality of the initial design.
What is the difference between a graphic design and an illustration?
First of all, it should be noted that graphic design is seen mostly as a commercial art, while illustration is seen as a work of art. Graphic design is therefore about communicating with a target audience, while illustration is primarily concerned with a creative interpretation.
On the other hand, graphic design makes use of a material that is already ready to create its works, while illustration builds its own design from scratch.
It should also be mentioned that other differences lie in the end; The main job of graphic design is to communicate, be very precise, and combine text with images. Graphic design with a confusing message is bad design; On the other hand, if an illustration has an unclear or ambiguous message, it can be considered an abstract and interesting art.
What is the importance of an illustration.
Illustration is important in graphic design for a myriad of reasons; one of them is that it represents a practical alternative for graphic design; since when you want to include an image without having to use photography, you can give a more artistic and original touch by means of an illustration.
Illustration tools make it possible to create much more dynamic and precise infographics; which are used in the development of designs for companies, real estate or educational institutions that seek to publicize their services in a more intuitive way for readers.
Likewise, illustration conveys a more emotional message in any circumstance, unlike graphic design tools, illustration manages to capture the art of a message and transmit it through a dynamic image that instantly catches the attention of all viewers.
Conclusion
Illustrations are images, which normally accompany texts or stories, and which convey a message; which is very useful and effective for graphic design, since it brings creativity and dynamism to any design work, also eliminates the rigidity of photos or precise images to add an artistic and dynamic touch to any graphic piece.
Currently, illustration presents a great variety of purposes related to communication and art, which is why it has acquired a role of great importance in the development of graphic design, whether for advertising purposes or related to another type of visual communication.
