Alita: Battle Angel is a 2019 American cyberpunk-action film based on Japanese manga artist Yukito Kishiro's 1990s series Gunnm and its 1993 original video animation adaptation, Battle Angel.

In 2563, 300 years after Earth was devastated by a catastrophic war known as "The Fall", scientist Dr. Dyson Ido discovers a disembodied female cyborg with an intact human brain while scavenging for parts in the massive scrapyard of Iron City.

Ido attaches a new cyborg body to the brain and names her "Alita" after his deceased daughter.

...[Alita] awakens in a new body with no memory of her past and sets out to uncover her destiny.

In true cyberpunk tradition, Alita is thrust into a post-apocalyptic setting where the oppressed poor live in squalor, while the controlling elite live in a floating paradise.

I particularly liked the portrayal of cyborgs in society - a commonplace, but marginalized species of humans.

Akin to our real life, historical "racisim", "specie-ism" was rampant.

Cyborgs like Alita were both envied and feared for their superhuman abilities; leading to a thriving black market for the tech behind those abilities.

The movie has easily recognizable archetypes for all viewers to personally identify with (e.g., a badass warrior hero, an all-powerful villain with his minions, an empathetic father figure, an estranged mother with a latent maternal instinct, a conflicted romantic interest, etc.).

With James Cameron as the producer and the advanced special effects technology from "Avatar", it's no surprise that the movie production and CGI was first rate.

I give a strong "Thumbs-Up" and recommend "Alita: Battle Angel" for multi-genre audiences of all ages.

P.S.

Last year, James Cameron stated that future "Alita" movies were on the way.

He wasn't kidding.

Believing that school was too boring, he dropped out of High School early; only to earn an AA, BS and MBA in less than 4 years much later in life – while working full-time as a Navy/Marine Corps Medic.

In spite of a fear of heights and deep water, he performed high altitude, free-fall parachute jumps and hazardous diving ops in deep, open ocean water.

After 24 years of active duty, he retired in Asia.

Since then, he's been a full-time, single papa and actively pursuing his varied passions (Writing, Disruptive Technology, Computer Science and Cryptocurrency - plus more hobbies too boring or bizarre for most folk).

He lives on an island paradise with his girlfriend, teenage daughter and two dogs.
