What Can You Count On The Poor For?

If you find yourself at the bus stop one day and suddenly realize you don’t have your bus pass or any cash, don’t ask the other man wearing a button up shirt and tie for $3.75. No way.

If there is a homeless person, ask them first. Then move to next person who seems to have the least money. This seems backwards and unfair. Maybe it seems like income inequality or prejudice.

You will find that I am right. It saves everyone time.

When someone finds themselves in a better position than you, whether it is their financial standing, or undergarment branding, they now have a secret license to advise.

The guy in the button-down shirt might be deeply caring and sharing. However, this unspoken license to advise will slow everyone down. He wants to help. He is going to troubleshoot. He wants to have a complete understanding of the situation.

Did you leave your wallet at home?

Where is your bus pass?

Where are you going?

The questions might continue until the bus arrives.

Someone who has clearly had financial trouble will quickly understand the predicament and will often be just as willing to resolve it. The problem only needs the following two points to be resolved:

  1. A willingness to help

  2. The ability to help

For a small monetary amount always ask the poor first. They have missed a meal, missed a bus, they don’t want your story. They know it.
