Why we decided to home educate (homeschool) our children until they are at least 7 years old!

in homeschooling •  7 years ago

The compulsory school age here in the UK is 5 years old (Year 1), and a lot of kids will start school at 4 years old entering reception class.

My eldest is now 6 years old, but when she was around 2, I remember speaking to my neighbours with children around the same age, and they were already urging me to start deciding and preparing to apply for schools for my child at that point. They all had older children as well, so they were briefing me on the procedures, and told me that the "best" school in our area was catholic, so unless we were catholic ourselves, we had no chance of getting in.

So I looked around at the other available schools in my area, and none of them sounded that great. All the schools that sounded remotely promising, we were either out of the catchment area for (we don't live close enough to, so pretty much no chance of getting in), or only prioritised entry for children of the school's religion. Honestly, the whole thing just felt stressful and felt off. I remember thinking that this can't be how things have to be?!

So this led to my husband and I doing a bit more research, to see what our options were in regards to educating our child. One thing led to another, and eventually home educating became a realistic option, especially as I researched more and more the benefits of starting schooling at a later age. In countries like Finland, Denmark and Sweden, children don't start school until the age of 7. Finland has a great reputation when it comes to their education system, so I looked into it and found that I really liked what they were promoting. Here's some reading on Finland's education system if you're interested 🙂 This became one of our main driving forces to home educate until our children are at least 7 years of age!

Another reason I didn't want my children to start school until at least 7 years old, is because I believe they should mainly learn through play at this age. More and more are expected of our children nowadays, they hardly get a chance to just be kids anymore. And many studies are showing that playing gives children vital skills in how to learn. Here's a great read on this topic based on the Lego Foundation's findings and here's another article worth reading on this topic.

Another benefit to home educating, that fits our specific family lifestyle is being free to go on holiday/an adventure whenever we want. We have family all over the world, and because of my husband's work, his time off is sporadic, which means that we have to be very flexible when we get to go travel/visit family. Another big benefit is that I get to spend as much precious time with my children while I still can, and while they still actually want to be with me! If my child had started school at age 4 (as lots do), she'd be gone for 6-8 hrs a day, 5 days a week. Although this is the norm for a lot of people, we just didn't want this to be our normal, not at that age anyway!

There are many more reasons as to why we home educate our children, and love doing it, but to keep this post short and sweet, I'll go into those another time! I will also do a post soon about what I do with my kids regularly, instead of them going to school 😊

good on you , i wish i could have taught my kids at home , but i do what i can there not vaccinated , i try to give them only good food and natural medicines and foster a sense of skepticism always proposing alternative views to the main stream programming

I'm just grateful that we found out it was an option and that we are able to sustain this lifestyle! We all do our best as parents, don't we?

And definitely, teaching our younger generations to always think for themselves is so important! Good on you too :)

Great post and so pleased to see you and others sharing that there are other options available than going to school, especially for younger children.
I've read articles about Sweden and other countries and how they teach through play up to the age of 7 and get better results doing this than us and other countries putting 4 year olds in school.
Well done you! I look forward to hearing what you do with your children and how they are learning. :)

Very odd, but somehow I'm only seeing this comment now!

It's definitely nice to see many others doing what's best for their children, whether it's mainstream or alternative choices, and I feel very fortunate to live in a country that gives us the freedom to do so!

Thank you and I'm definitely looking forward to doing a post about what we get up to! Funny thing is I was actually planning on doing one earlier tonight, so I was going through my Dropbox to see what good home educating pictures I could use for the post. I ended up getting totally sidetracked looking at my kids' baby pictures and videos instead, and crying about how they're not babies any more! I accepted that it was probably a more important agenda for tonight, as I've definitely been feeling something in the air today, and have been wanting a good cry all day! Now I feel so much better :)

Hope all is well with you, much love!!

Yes odd how sometimes a comment gets missed and we find it later!

It is good that we have freedom of choice here in the UK, reading some of what is happening in USA is a little shocking with compulsory vaccinations etc, not a good route for liberty.

I often find I will be taken off track by something and end up doing something else! It's usually the better option for us though and is the universe at work guiding us, so great you just flowed with it and enjoyed the photos and videos. Can be sad that they've grown up, mine are 17 and 21 so baby photos are such a long time ago now, but I'm sure we will have grandchildren to hug and love!

There is a lot of emotion being released right now, people crying and letting stored energy out, so you're not alone there, I had some for a day or two as well, good to let it all out! :)

Thanks for your 528 love frequency you sent. That was so sweet! I didn't quite know how to respond with no chat here. Are you on Steemit chat? Yes all well here, was away visiting Leicester University Thurs pm and yesterday, so busy day with lots of driving and walking! Love to you too! <3

This week has been intense! Thank you for the support, I do feel it's nice to know that others are going through similar things. It's a good reminder of my connection to the universe and to the collective consciousness.

I am on Steemit chat, but for some reason, it doesn't work very well, so I hardly use it. Will try and find you there :) Hope you've had a lovely weekend! Talk soon <3

Yes it has been an intense week! The global connection does affect us more than we realise, we've had hurricanes, 9/11 anniversary. Putney and now more hurricanes, so a lot going on in the global consciousness. We need to keep flowing Pure & Divine energy and 'floating above it all' as much as we can.

It can be harder to notice our vibration lowering when it is global energies doing this, because it's not obvious to us, so it's a slow erode and then suddenly we feel it.

I've sent you a chat message, had emails about yours but no chat when I logged on, so weird, but hopefully we can chat fine there! :) I had a quiet weekend, recharging, but found out some interesting information from reading some Steemit posts and watching videos! :) Hope you had a lovely weekend and have a good week! :)

Thanks! Even though I know how much meditation can help me in a time like this, I somehow still forget to do it more regularly! I really enjoyed your peace and stillness audio, and I found it to be a great duration, so will definitely use that to meditate as well :)

Great to hear my peace and stillness audio is helping you. I have some slightly longer audios on my website that would also be great for meditating to, the 'Floating Audios' are really good for this, you'll probably feel really spacey!

You can flow peace and stillness to your mind throughout the day too, just say:

"Filling my mind with Pure Peace & Stillness"

and you will feel calmer. You may need to say it a few times and take a few deep breaths before you feel the peace flow in.

Doing this stops the stress and mind chatter from building and is great when we're super busy and mediation and time out can get skipped! We can have 'mini time outs' throughout the day! :)

Yes definitely! Just doing it briefly as I read your comment, I can already feel the "nice feelings" hehe :)

I sometimes find it so interesting that the many things we can do to put us in a much better place are so simple and effective, but yet we don't do them (enough). Even just the simple act of deep breathing can do wonders, yet I know for myself, it's not always my instinctive reaction.

Personally, I am always finding myself wanting to commit to good habits (such as deep breathing, meditating, yoga, affirmations, etc), but I somehow seem to find it hard to stay consistent. I will try my best to incorporate what you've suggested into my daily life, maybe a visual reminder will help :)

Thank you!

Although my wife and I are separated, we get on very well, and we have always said we will unschool our daughter (aged not quite 4). In the UK, it's currently a little easier than some countries, but still you end up against the state occasionally. We are determined that she will not end up in the state education system however, and although we don't live together any more, my wife and I are very much on the same page about this, and will do whatever it takes to make it happen.

That's cool! And definitely great that you and your wife are on the same page on this :)

There are many active home educating communities all over the UK, hopefully you guys have one in your area!
