I Killed A Cacti... But Now Things Are Different

in homesteadchallenge •  7 years ago

When I was younger I could never grow a thing. I remember one time my dad had given me a cacti. Two weeks later it was dead.
But, oh how have things changed.

Now I have a garden full of tomatoes, four varieties of peppers, sweet corn, two varieties of cucumbers, a greenhouse full of herbs, eggplant, lettuce, spinach and arugula, onions, garlic and potatoes. I'm sure there are more but off the top of my head that is where my garden stands.

I had known deep down, even from an early age that I wanted to homestead. I wanted to grow my own food.
At one point we were raising 200 chickens. My garage had two incubators and little fuzzy yellow chicks running around.
We've had a goat and raised a pig to fill the freezer.

The freedom of growing and producing your own food became important. All the GMOs and preservatives in store bought food is ridiculous.

Homesteading is important to me because I have the ability, the means and desire to not rely on others.
