BTE Gardening ROCKS! Look at these ROOTS!

in homesteaderscoop •  5 years ago  (edited)

After a long and wonderful day I really wanted some roasted chicory root mock coffee.....but we were fresh out. So...just before dark I ran out to harvest some. Check out these roots! The longest being 18". Gotta love BTE gardening (Back To Eden aka No Dig or Lasagna Layering - more info about that on our FB page here https://www.facebook.com/notes/kindred-acres/bte-no-dig-garden-style/2241477949406013/ ).

Using the BTE method softens the soil making it nice and easy for deep roots to grow. These nice long chicory roots will make a wonderful roasted beverage. I can't wait to enjoy them.

There ya go! Wow, that's awesome!

Thanks! :) I'm actually roasting them up now. It smells sooooo good!! Seriously. Mouth watering. It's like a roasted chocolate mixed with a roasted coffee smell. Have you ever had roasted chicory beverages before?

No, never have. I don't like coffee flavor at all, but chocolate, hmmmm.....

Good harvest, you have any knowledge on how to prepare burdock root? I have plenty of wild ones growing around here.

Thanks!! I haven't worked with burdock root much but planned to add it to our apothecary garden so I have bookmarked some info that might help you. https://www.growforagecookferment.com/how-to-cook-burdock-root/

My suggestion is to check out Chestnut School of Herbal Medicine. They have an awesome blog with lots of free information. You might find some more info there. They also offer amazing classes. I've taken some of their classes. Just a thought. And just fyi, I am not associated with the school nor do I get any kick backs or benefit for recommending them. I just truly appreciate their work and like to share the info.

Cool thanks for the info. I have plenty of root material to work with here.

Hey, if you are up for a trade let me know!! Are you in need of seeds, clippings, plats, root? If so let me know what you need and I'll see if I have it, then we can swap for a piece of burdock root? Just a thought....

Sure now i just need to go out and harvest some. Hopefully all the mushrooms don't distract me too much.

Awesome! Well keep me posted! :)
