We have been working hard here at Kindred Acres. Cleaning out the gardens, harvesting, starting new seeds, processing our harvest, cleaning around the homestead, etc. The weather has been absolutely perfect and we are totally taking full advantage.
Today I finally got around to putting the poly coat on the newly stained gazebo. I also managed to harvest near 6 lbs of beans (some went in our bellies before the weighing, and more were found after the weighing) and a bunch of other goodies! We also baked some homemade sourdough breads today. Over the last two days, we processed the large basket of calyx (made a few gallons of chilled zinger tea, fruit leather, and dehydrated calyx), harvested and roasted chicory, made some delicious homegrown homemade meals for us to enjoy....we've picked fresh, juicy, and sweet peppers and beans to snack on as we worked in the gardens, we ate strawberries fresh from the plant that dripped the sweetest juice down our chins.... We've homeschooled, we spent time with friends and family, and of course, I worked. And here I am, exhausted as could be, every muscle in my body sore as could me, my eyes are heavy, yet my heart is so full. So happy and so proud of all we have accomplished. Hard work truly does pay off.
Take a look at some of our pictures!
We harvested some of our corn (and such pretty corn it is!!) to make fresh cornbread to have along side our fresh homegrown homemade tomato-vegetable soup. It was so delicious.
Kaliah did her homeschooling out on a blanket while I worked on putting the poly coat on the gazebo.
We harvested so many beans today and yet there is still so much left out there to harvest over the next few days. I was so tuckered today that I honestly didn't even process these yet. I'll take care of that tomorrow. Apart from what is in the bucket, we also ate a bunch and we found a bunch more ready ones after this photo was taken so all in all we harvested roughly 6 lbs of beans today! Not to shabby! :) We also harvested a few other goodies in the process.
We worked on processing all those Roselle calyx that were harvested. That took a lot of effort and time but it was worth it in the end. We also got some seeds out of it all to list on our Etsy shop so if you are looking for Roselle seeds, check out shop! Link is below!
And tonight we made a delicious meal of seasoned rice with homegrown cowpeas along side of a nice plate full of homegrown sauteed veggies (sweet onions, sweet peppers, longevity spinach, herbs, and spices). We had some delicious watermelon for dessert.
We washed and separated all the spinach. The dehydrator is full to the brim with Chinese Spinach. We dry them on a very low setting to keep the nutrients intact and then we grind them to a powder and jar for winter smoothies.
We also got to the post office today to ship out some orders for our Etsy shop!
It brings me so much joy to fill my families bellies with healthful, fresh, nutritious foods that we grow here on our own property. It makes me so happy to be able to teach my daughter how to do this as well. Yes, it is a LOT of hard work and dedication. I often get the question...."Bren where do you find the time to do all of this?!?". I honestly don't know! I guess you just figure it out! It all comes together somehow. I'm feeling blessed.
I post this not to brag, but to encourage you all to do the same! While it may be a lot of hard work, there are so many rewards to reap from it! Homesteading is just something that is meant to be! Growing your own food is one of the most important things you can do for you and your family.

Everything is looking delicious! I am envious of your corn. The raccoons have wiped out my corn crops this year.

We have had a really rough time with corn last year and this year mostly because of storms. They always get knocked down. Next year I am going to try something a little different. I'm blessed to have gotten anything this year since we lost most of the tall stuff (corn and sorghum) but we did get something so I will happily take the blessing.

Thank you. We try to grow most if no all of our produce needs here on the property. We do need to add more nut trees. As of now, we only have 2 young chestnut trees but I plan to add hazelnuts and pecans as well. :) I'd love to also add a cold-hardy avocado. It's on my list. ;)

I get the same question and comment, "That's a lot of work!" I also don't know how I get it all done, but it happens, one way or another.
But not this year, this year we are building and the food preservation is much lower.
