Today was our volunteer day here at Kindred Acres. People came out to lend a helping hand, take a look around, learn a few things, and enjoy being out in nature. There were a few nature creatures spread out in their full glory on display for everyone to enjoy. A beautiful zipper spider, a few fennel plants loaded with swallowtail caterpillars, birds flying high above, and so much more. We sifted compost, planted beets, carrots, radish, and a few other things. Made plant tags, talked about ideas for a new trellis to hold the beast of a kiwi vine, discussed wild and easy plants, and so much more. The kids got to play, run, climb trees, be silly.....just as it should be. It was such a pleasurable and yet productive day. Feeling blessed.
The calyx were in desperate need to be harvested so that was a task on the to-do-list that got done. It's a tedious task, snipping one off at a time, so I'm feeling pretty happy and blessed to have had the help today! There is still a whole lot out there to be harvested and even more to come but for today, a nice large basket full was collected along with a few handfuls for each of our volunteers to take home.
If you aren't familiar with calyx, stay tuned! I'll be writting up a nice informative post about these, how we use them, grow them, etc etc.
But for now, a homesteaders job is never done.....this will take some time to process this basket full.....on to it then!
I hope you had an amazingly productive day today as well!! If any of you are in the NC, don't forget to follow us on FB so you can join in on our events, gatherings, take our classes/workshops, etc.
XOXO
With lots of love

Volunteer days are fun when there's learning and kids involved! This is what we do for our poultry processing day aka Freezer Camp. Sounds like yours was a joy! Will be waiting for the calyx post...

They are fun....and helpful. I need to get out of my head sometimes....and stop feeling like it is a burden to people when honestly they enjoy coming out and nobody HAS to volunteer. They do because they want to! The kids had a blast, the parents learned and one was even taking notes. Hopefully I can get to posting the Roselle calyx post later today. :) It's going to be another busy day here....
