Lovin' My Mail Lady, My Favorite Dollar Store & Fellow Homesteading Steemians More Every Day

Second Rendition Of What's In The Box? Answer below!

This time of year my mailbox gets filled pretty much daily with seed catalogs, packages of seeds and, of course, the dreaded bills. But every once in awhile some new and exciting deliveries are made (What's In The Box?).

Another delight I find starting at this time of year is when I go into my favorite stores and find the gardening section has started to come alive. Seeds, gardening supplies and all those little treasures that most gardeners gush and ohhh and ahhh over.

So let's get started on what this past week has brought me; whether through the mail or what I found in a store that got me even more revved up for spring and gardening season.

Dollar Tree Is Starting To Blossom With Gardening Supplies

When I walked into one of the local Dollar Trees the other day to pick up a few items I immediately headed to the area where the gardening and seasonal items are usually on display. Not to be disappointed, I was full of smiles when I saw they had started to stock some gardening items in between the Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's Day merchandise.

My heart fluttered and skipped a beat. For now I only picked up some cool little gardening label sticks. But trust me, I will be on the look-out for more supplies in the upcoming weeks.

Mail Call: Incoming & Outgoing

Sending out @coyoteom's requested echinacea seeds, my parents' 54th wedding anniversary card and another special treat for another steemian. Someone in Georgia keep an eye out on your mailbox!

I have been receiving packages and envelopes filled with seeds almost every day since last Saturday! This excites me to no end.

From @beatitudes8 I received my seed exchange winnings of Purple Hull Peas and a bonus of Luffa Gourds!

I am so stinkin' excited about these Luffa seeds! I was ordering some so when I make my homemade soaps because I had wanted to add the luffa gourd to the molds to make a self-scrubbing bar of soap. Now I can and I have plenty of these heirloom seeds to sustain my soapmaking project for years to come!

THANK YOU @beatitudes8!!

I have also received most of my second order of seeds. I have really been expanding my garden and these are what arrived:

  • Calendula
  • Foxglove
  • Lemon Balm
  • Italian Lavender
  • Jalapeno (hot) peppers
  • German Chamomile
  • Cayenne Peppers
  • Radicchio
  • Savoy Spinach

Still awaiting delivery of:

  • Hibiscus
  • Snapdragons
  • Wormwood
  • Spearmint
  • Milk Thistle
  • (More) Luffa Gourds

AND Finally Some Yummy Goodness: What's In The Box?

Last week @freedompoint chatted with me and mentioned what a FABULOUS scone his wife, @freedomtowrite makes... She wanted to send me some and he asked what my favorite was. Well, I have NEVER had a scone, but I do love lemon.

mmm.jpg

Rest assured @freedomtowrite, the package arrived safely and I believe no YETI invaded the supply!

So this morning, after I hid the delivery from my husband and dog overnight (as I wasn't quite ready to share my good fortune with anyone yet), I brewed up my second cup of hazelnut coffee and served up a Lemon Sugar Scone. And let me tell you... these are SUPER moist, so soft, full of lemon-y flavor and just the right amount sweetness! I have already informed @freedomtowrite that she needs to make a post and share this HEAVENLY recipe!

THANK YOU @freedomtowrite and @freedompoint for the care package!

i got some stuff at dollar tree the other day, too! it was meant to be! tiny clay pots for my cacti transplants, transplantable peat pots & some tiny canisters for seed storage. totally did not expect to find any of that, and might have to run back for some labels (they werent out yet). i have big plans for sunday 😁

There are so MANY cool little things in that store! I see people making neat crafts from items.
Can't wait to see your creation!

right?! there were so many things i picked up and then put right back. i'm trying not to clutter up the new space, and remembered to tell myself "will you use this immediately?" before actually buying in. i can't let myself get carried away, it's so easy to start a thousand projects and abandon 75% of them!

Your so very welcome. We are enjoying the luffa soap. My wife put some kind of oil when she melted the soap down for the luffa's. No more wintry dry skin. be sure to soak both of those seeds over night before planting.

OMGosh!!! YES!
Now I need to research how to do it and the care for the luffa when I harvest it

I am just getting ready to start my seeds today! And I LOVE getting seeds in the mail, almost as much as I like getting eggs in the mail (I have hatched so many birds from ebay eggs!)

You know, I never thought of dollar store for seeds and supplies, you just added another thing on today's 'to-do' list. I'm going to get right on that.

I'm a new follower now too, so good to know you. I am an artist and an amateur homesteader.

I get a lot of litttle things at the DT. Extra gardening gloves, some little seed storage containers, stickers and labels, etc

And when I saw those stick name tags, I had to get some. They will be perfect in the herb area and in the greenhouse.

Wow. I should be thinking spring you got me thinking about it already. Everything looks so bright and cheery.

It is so hard not to think spring right now! Feels like I have been cooped up inside FOREVER!

It feels like forever and we still have forever to go. Spring takes a long time to visit here. However it is nice to think about it and look at flowers

I started to order my seeds for this Springs gardens. I rely on your posts and a few others to learn new seeds that seem to be popping up everywhere so I can try new things. Thanks @goldendawne

It's amazing how many different seeds, plants, herbs, etc are out there that I never had clue about too!
So glad my posts are helping you out!

Happy planting. Great story I wish y’all well for planting season. Resteemed

Thank you!

I've got a few seeds that you may be interested in trying....

ooohhhh... like what? Oh man, oh man.... Now you got me excited!!

I sure wish our local dollarstore would start bringing in some gardening stuff. LOL, Wish Canada had Dollartree. Might have to make a run to NY State just to visit a dolllartree. Thanks @goldendawne as always for your fun posts

There are actually six of them within an hours drive of me. SO when I go that far from home, I try to hit two of them. They are the biggest ones I know of in the area.

I have to be careful when rummaging through the gardening section!!!

Why is that??? Too much to pick from to buy? Or aisles are too small and narrow?

tempted to buy things I don’t need!!

Is that pie beside the cup.....

No it is a lemon sugar scone.

Sounds like your garden will be filled with colour soon - I bet it will look amazing :)

I can't wait until July into August when things are REALLY blooming!

As a follower of @followforupvotes this post has been randomly selected and upvoted! Enjoy your upvote and have a great day!

Congrats to you.
Will love to get one of your box

very nice and helpful information, thanks for having @goldendawne

wish to see them grow up

Lemon Balm and Spearmint. I have these growing in my pots. Wish I could just rip out and hand them to you. That's how I got mine started. Sometimes those seeds are hard to sprout. Best luck.

I had lemon balm last year; I want to add more in a new location this season.
Mint and spearmint have been my problem child so to speak. Last year no matter how much I tried, coaxed or replanted, I just could not get those two to produce. They would sprout, start growing and eventually fizzle out. Fingers crossed this year I have success with them.

I am so glad you love them! Stacie D is like a food wizard haha

OMGosh! Is she ever!!! They are so good! I have never had a scone before but I LOVE THEM!

Oh yeah! I get to be a tester! She creates all sorts of flavors and I love them all!

What a nice package! My sister sends me baked goods from BC all the way across the country to NS :D I get so excited and definitely hoard them a bit, haha.
Yay spring is coming!!!

I know, right?! I was watching every day for the mail lady.. when I saw her rambling down the road, I practically broke a leg to get there because I knew the scones were coming any day!

Can't wait. Going to be starting seeds next month!

I have two months to wait.... I live a little too far north- zone 6a/b

Oh my, I can't believe Dollar Stores have seeds for sale already! I have to make a trip there soon..I have a tiny strip in the back of the condo that they allow me to do what I want, so I will use it for my flowers to feed the bees and butterflies, at least just that..

Yup! I was surprised too! I figured they wouldn't start stocking the shelves with gardening items until after V-Day. So I saw a few things and grabbed those plant label markers- which are kind of neat for the herb garden area.

Ahhh! I'm so glad you got them, and sooo happy you love them! I also love your Dollar Tree finds...it's one of my favorite stores!!

Yes! DT is my all time favorite store to roam around in! I always find something I need!

Your posts always make me want to snatch up my trowel and scamper out to the garden and plant something NOW!

LOL! Love your enthusiasm!

I'm ready for spring already, it's been a little too much winter this season in Central New Jersey!!!

I know.. seems like this has been one of the longest and coldest winters here too.

I have really been expanding my garden

@goldendawne I'm an engineer/computer science student, but honesty I love things relating to farming, planning or poultry, This post is great.

thank you! Nothing better than digging into fresh soil and watching your handiwork come to life- literally!

i use to have a garden filled with poppies , daisies ,corn flowers and corn cockles , but we moved in oktober to this new house so i have to start all over again , i did manage to put some bulbs in the ground in November before the winter and they are already showing above ground soon we can make fresh macro photography of those :)

That's is one thing I will dread in about two years. We are scouting out and looking for our final property. So all this work... will need to be repeated. But I'm OK with that. I love creating new garden beds and rearranging things.

Getting seeds in the mail is one of the best things ever. How wonderful that you are already receiving them.

What fun, that means planting season is coming soon. Smiles!

Oh I know! Every trip to the mailbox has been bringing HUGE smiles to my face! I think the mail lady is jealous- the other day I met her at the box and she said... "oh, more seeds? Lucky."

What fun. Enjoy.

Awesome post, @goldendawne! You are certainly keeping your mail lady busy! I think @freedomtowrite should do a post about her lemon scones! A lot of us would love one with our coffee!

I know, me too! But it's a secret!!! Dang it!

Last time I was in the USA my mother went nuts over the seeds they sell over at the dollar tree! They were so cheap and worked beautifully on her garden!

I was surprised that most of them said heirloom on the packages.

Oh this is so much fun! How can I get in on the fun share-by-mail and adventures in gardening?!
