Hi dere, and welcome to da homestead, eh!
Once again, I find myself with several things to talk about that don't have enough matching things for a separate post, so here we go.
First off, The idea of a small town homestead. I live in what many people would call a small town. The population is somewhere around 7500 people, give or take a few. I can't really call it an urban homestead, it just doesn't seem to fit that description. It's not really a suburban homestead, I don't live in a suburb. So, I guess small town homestead is what this is. I think this place fits the description of homestead in most ways, except for farm animals, which the town doesn't allow us to keep. No poultry, no rabbits, other than as a pet. Certainly nothing larger, such as a goat. Not that I would want a goat here, I've had goats when I lived out in the country, they tend to be more of a pain in the ass than they're worth.
Second thing, I have a hollyhock growing in my garden. I have no idea how it got there, I didn't plant it. I wasn't sure what it was when it was little, but I figured it out when it started getting buds. It's flowering now, and it's pretty cool.
Third thing, my Early Girl tomatoes are starting to get ripe! Lunch tomatoes soon!
Fourth thing, the popcorn in the greenhouse is tasseling now, and I'm seeing silk from developing ears on several of the stalks.
Last thing, we bought another IBC cube for rain water storage on Monday, the local company that we got it from was selling them for 30 bucks, which is pretty cheap. They used to contain paint gel for paintballs, it's supposedly non-toxic, and the IBC was mostly clean when we got it. Here I am, cleaning out the last remnants of the gel. It was fluorescent green paintball paint...
Well, that's it for right now, hope you enjoyed the pictures!

So I know a secret about that rainwater. Nothing will make a garden grow like RAINWATER ! So much better than city water that has chemicals.

Thanks! I need to replace the brake line that runs to the rear end on the truck, then maybe I can actually use it.

I definitely wouldn't mind moving to a small town. I'd love to get set up off grid :). When I'm done with my education maybe...
Nice post, can't wait to see more on how this develops.

I feel like a urban homestead is a homestead on a small property, like in a town. haha. I dunno. You can just call it a homestead. Specifics aren't needed! Haha.
I love hollyhocks! Sad I didn't get any planted this year. The bees love them too!
PS. I am in love with your little yellow greenhouse.

Strangely enough, the little yellow greenhouse is the one that I'm in the process of removing. We built a bigger one last fall, that's the one I'm using now. I used the small one for 5 or 6 years and it served me well.

I could send it to you, but that might cost a bit... :-)
If you'd like to see how I built it, I did a post about it last month. Here's the link to the post.

One thing I would suggest though, don't use landscape timbers for posts like I did, they don't hold up well when you bury them in the ground. The treated 4X4s are treated for direct burial and the landscape timbers are not. They rot faster than I expected them to. Treated 4X4s cost more, but they last way longer in the ground.
