Dealing With S***! The lowdown on humanure

in homesteading •  7 years ago

I move my humanure to a seperate spot on the property to do its stuff, but I use my urine for pouring over my animal bedding and their droppings. I use sawdust for my quail catch pans, and hay/straw in the chicken and goat houses. I layer the two and pour 2-4 gallons of collected urine (I have a urine diverter in my toilet) over the top each time. I have the best, earthiest, richest, blackest compost I have ever seen! The amount of steam coming out of it is also amazing to watch. All because urine is an amazing catalyst for composting! I never realized how valuable your pee is!

A human produces enough nutrients in urine to grow 80 % of their crops. Problem is the ammonia and salt levels but using urine on compost will take care of that and also if it is hot compost it will deal with any pathogens etc you may have. Problem with using urine is after you take out people that use prescription drugs and people with infections or drug abuse problems that only leaves around 15% of the population in the US that is capable of using urine for growing. Their was a reason those old country guys would pee on their compost piles. It would be safer though to use livestock urine and probably less regulated if you growing to sell. I know of people that use rabbit urine to spray on plants saying it is better fertilizer then the rabbit manure is. If you have living soil you can convert the ammonia into nitrogen to feed your plants.
