At Bellecross Hens I breed and rear traditional (heritage) breed hens and also keep a laying flock of hybrid hens for eggs to sell at the gate.
Each of the pure breed hens lays a different colour egg and the multi colour boxes are always the most popular.
So who lays what ?
Firstly the Lohman Brown , not a pure breed but the hybrid hen most commonly kept in commercial flocks to produce the cream colour eggs found in most stores
Now for the traditional breeds with the more interesting colours.
Partridge Welsummer - layer of a lovely dark terracotta matt colour egg
The Crested Cream Legbar is our blue egg layer
Not a pure breed but a cross between two pure breeds is our olive egg layer the Bellecross Belle
She is a from a Cream Legbar Hen running with a Welsummer cockerel (rooster)
The Exchequer Leghorn is my white egg layer
I've recently bought a small breeding flock of French Black Copper Marans who hopefully will lay lovely dark chocolate brown eggs with a glossy shell.
Black copper marans would be a great addition to our flock. The females almost look exactly like our black star hybrids. (RIR x barred rock)
