For many years we have raised chickens... egg layers. I have free ranged chickens, I have kept chickens in a fully enclosed pen and I have kept chickens in an open pen. O
Over the years I have lost a few birds to predators, such as opossums, measles, owls and foxes. Chickens also have a knack for just up and dying on their own for no reason at all.
All this time we have rarely closed our chickens in over night. Never really had a need to. Until ... we got DUCKS.
Our ducks refuse to go into the coop at night, rather they sleep below the raised coop. I just don't feel at ease with this new duck situation. So I installed a sliding door on a cable to remedy the problem. It worked just fine, but it required that every evening at dark I would have to go out and shut them in. Every morning at daybreak I would have to let them out.
Not anymore !! I just installed an automatic coop door (from Chicken Guard) and I am quite optimistic that this will accomplish the door closing task.
Nice addition to the coop and I bet you'll be glad on those frigid and rainy mornings and evenings.
It's funny because until you mentioned about the slow speed and actually demo'd it, the word guillotine popped into my head 😱
But I'm sure the chickens and ducks will quickly learn to react to the sound of it and do the right thing.
It will also be interesting to see what kind of battery life you get?

It closed just as programmed... I however didn't program the opening time correctly and had to re-program it this morning at 5:50am. Just part of the learning curve, I suppose.
Other than that it works great and should prove to be a time saver.
