Free Range Chickens - Better Here or There?

in homesteading •  7 years ago

You chicken owners know

that the chickens can have SO MUCH yard to roam in and they will likely end up in all the places YOU DON'T WANT THEM!

This girl spent several hours just hanging out on the front porch. When I approached her to take this picture she was sitting directly in front of the front door like one of the cats or dogs. She didn't seem too bothered by me coming up to her. Actually I think she may have been waiting for me there. Perhaps to be held or fed? It wasn't until I knelt down with my camera that she decided to get up and walk behind my boots.

I kinda like having the hens come around the house, but I do not like all the poop on the porch! LOL

Even with all the fuss about the hens on the porch

I'd rather them hang out there than in the garden. That's FOR SURE. They can tear up a fresh seed bed or eat a bunch of fresh seedlings in minutes. My garden last year was almost totally destroyed by chickens when I first got it planted.

This year I'm using a lot of wire to keep the cats and chickens out of the fresh seed beds. This picture shows some old tomato cages laying on their sides in a fresh bed of flower seeds to help deter the cats from using it as a big litter box, and the chickens from scratching it all to pieces. I hope it works. My lovely bride @findingjoy would love to see all those Zinnias and Marigold flowers come up and thrive.

LOL Just waiting for you to go in the house so she can go in!

They've come in before LOL. Cats like to sneak in too. I'm not sure why they all want in so badly.

I really love that photo with the chicken and boots. It has a vintage feel to it!

I've learned to shake out my boots every morning because I've found things in there that my feet don't want to connect with including snakes and chicken poo. We don't have the second issue anymore because the hens have their own special fenced pasture to roam now. Too many things like to eat them around here!

We leave all of our "work" shoes outside and I find all kinds of stuff in them. The biggest thing is my 2 year old daughter loves to stick toys and other odd objects into my shoes.

Our chickens don't get on the porch much but they do escape our pasture and make it to my neighbors garden from time to time. Don't mess with old people and their gardens!

haha.I am still finding Lego from when we had little boys visiting this summer. Super cute :)

For sure! I shake my boots out every time.

I have found scorpions in my boots before. No risk taking anymore. I found a scorpion in a shirt that had been folded on a closet shelf for a while. Took 3 stings before stripping the shirt off as fast as I could!

ah ... now I remember why I live in a cold climate! That must have hurt something awful. I don't know much about scorpions but I am sure glad we don't have to deal with them.

Aaaand now I remember why I like 5 months of cold winter 😨

Your annoying chicken is gorgeous! It sounds like maybe putting a fence around the garden is in order. I know the cats can climb it but at least it might keep the chicks out! I can almost smell the mud on those boots!

There is a fence, but it's too low and too easy for them to get over. I do have plans to build a better fence... someday.

Ah, sounds like a good plan!

In the spring and fall we do so much schoolwork on the porch that I had to build the chickens a pen. It's not fun to go get ready to sit down and sit in chicken poo. Or step in it with bare feet! I've banned them to the fields!!! :)

In the house of my maternal grandparents there used to be chickens and ducks that walked freely throughout the patio, sometimes they entered the kitchen and left a mess. I liked how the ducks swam and bathed in a pond made of cement. There were also turtles and even a peacock. All living together happily.

Yes, chickens are relentless. I thought after shooing mine away from our deck daily about a dozen times a day, they'd get the point....but no, they keep coming! I don't get it, surely there are more bugs elsewhere to find. Anyway, we switched to ducks! They are somewhat better, but like to eat the bark off our young trees :(

Not an earwig in sight in the side yard.
