A Chicken Best Friend

So, I kept telling myself that I am totally not attached to my chickens. Nah, not at all. Well, that was true, until one of them became my Bestie Chicken! Yep. I folded. I did. She woo'd me and I was hooked. I call her "My Lady".

The first time I knew she and I were going to be great friends was when I was sitting out with all the chickens, basking in some of the first spring sun. She walked right up to me, sat down beside me, and sprawled out in the sun. It was then I knew that she trusted me implicitly. Trusted me enough to come right up to me, and relax fully.

She is an Easter Egger and I would have never guessed she'd turn out to be so friendly. Everyone always talks about how friendly and nice their chickens are, and I just really tried hard not to have too friendly of chickens. This is because I want to protect myself from heartbreak. Haha. I free range my chickens, and I know that sooner or later, someone will get picked off by a predator. It's just the way it is with how I choose to raise them.

She is always the first to greet me by running up to me and talking at me. She doesn't argue when I pick her up, and she likes to stand on my arm. I almost feel like I am some sort of bird of prey trainer when she stands on my arm. Maybe I should get a leather glove!? She does end up scratching me every time, but I never learn.

I have a small portion of my property fenced off to create a small sanctuary to call my back yard. I did this to hopefully keep the chickens out of it, as they like to destroy plants and shit everywhere. Also, my dog loves eating chicken poop. Mostly, they do stay out (surprisingly), except for my bestie chicken, I will often find her standing at the sliding glass door looking for me.

There's just something about hearing the pitter patter of her feet running behind me as I do some of my chores in the morning. She was laying on of her first eggs the other day, and it was as if she was pleading for me to stay with her while she figured it out. Some chickens seem rather empty and rather preoccupied with whatever they're scratching for, but there's something about this little chicken that helps me get my day straight.

Here are some of her first eggs for me. The green/blue ones are hers. I believe she is the one who laid the shell-less egg also.

I am really happy to have some sort of connection with a chicken. Now I can see how some people can regard them as pets! Pretty eye opening to see that a chicken can be more than just a birdbrain.
