My garlic scapes have come in and today it’s to pour down rain all day. I hoped I could get them cut between downpours and not get drowned. I went out as soon as it was light, as it wasn’t raining.
Arrow shows the immature scape, no blossom at base even
The first row only had 2 that weren’t big enough, but the other 3 rows had a couple dozen.
I filled my biggest bowl and part of the next biggest.
I plan to make garlic scape pesto and freeze it.
Here’s my previous post on how I do it:

If there’s too many scapes, and there might be as I planted nearly 300 plants, I might make some garlic scape pickles too.
This is how I do that:

Chesnok Red garlic
The Chesnok Red garlic was way behind my German Extra Hardy that I harvested today. So pickles may be in my future…
Ive been LOVING my garlic scapes pickled... can't wait til next season! Your garlic looks so healthy!

We planted garlic for the first time this year and have never had scapes. Look forward to trying them after seeing your posts lately.

You did plant hardneck garlic, right? Softneck doesn't make scapes as far as I know. That's why I only grow hardneck...

Oh no! I'm not sure. We will have to look to see what we planted. Thank you for letting us know, we didn't know.

As a fellow Mass resident, is there a particular name I need to look for when looking for these garlic plants? (Besides hardneck which you refer to) I want to plant a couple garlic pots this year and I was introduced to scapes last year at the farmers market. I love them!
Love seeing more mass residents on here! Certainly going to follow you and support you when I can!

I've grown German Extra Hardy for 15 years. Some people really like Music. You won't find plants. They are a bulb and need to be planted in October for best results, or in the spring. You get 1 scape per plant. They need 6" between plants to do well.

Aaah, nice to see that some of your garlic scapes have gotten big enough :) And also nice that you didn't get to be drowned when you decided to get 'em :D
