So, Here Are Some Of Our Goals

in homesteading •  7 years ago

These are more for us to keep focused, but figured we would share them here and accept any tips, things we are forgetting, delusions etc... that you folks can set us straight on. We are pretty blind so far, but that's where community is so helpful.

Our first goal is what we are doing now. Building skills and tools. I guess it's unconventional, but it's comfortable and we live in a town that is quite accepting of people having livestock. We have chickens, but I'm sure we could have a couple of goats if we had the room. People don't bother too much with what the neighbours are doing around here. It's quite nice in that way.

Our second goal is finding the perfect property and purchasing it. We have a good chunk saved for that, but it won't be enough to buy a decent place outright, so we will keep saving and looking. We don't want to have to sell our house to buy the property, so whatever we get will depend on what work is available where we go. Luckily for us, everywhere we are looking has winter road maintenance companies and being in the government employee union means that I can transfer if a job comes available and I get it. In that case, we would be able to float a small loan if we needed to buy something that was a bit more than we had stored up.

Thirdly we want to put a sea can on the property first and use it as a base camp until we can move there and keep an eye on things. Somewhere to store tools and other camp stuff, because we are hoping to get it a couple of years before we plan to move and use it as a vacation property that we spend our time at, clearing, setting up garden beds, etc...

Then comes the sawmill, firewood processor, walking tractor etc... I'm hoping we can get one with a chipper to start and then as we get space cleared we can look at other implements. I have looked a bit at Grillo and BTS, but not enough to know which to choose. One day I'll find someone who has them and see them up close.

I think that's a pretty good start, but here's a bunch of other ideas we have, in no particular order.

Thanks for making it this far. Have a great rest of the weekend.

All those goals seem fairly reasonable to me. I would be very careful about leaving stuff on a completely unattended property even in a Sea Can though. If people think there is something worth stealing they can be relentless.

I have heard of people putting up a shed or small cabin but having secret storage under the floor. When you are away anything of value like tools get stashed away. If people break in they might cause a bit of damage but they don't get your stuff.
