Black Gold, Permaculture Style!

in homesteading •  7 years ago

There is a HUGE movement going on in many countries right now to get back to our roots and live a simple life and try to provide for ourselves and our families off of our own land. Its called HOMESTEADING! This is not a new thing in fact it is just the opposite. It is a very old thing and untill the 1940's it was the way everyone in every culture lived.
In today's rat race society many are fed up with chasing the golden carrot because we have realized that money and "STUFF" does not bring happiness. No one lies on their death bed and regrets not earning more money. NO, they lie there and wish they had spent more time with their families.

Thanks to technology, the internet and the sharing of information in the world today we have been able to advance our techniques of how to live off the land more efficiently.
WELCOME TO PERMACULTURE! This is a system by which we have learned to plant annual crops with perennial plants and create a "food forest" on your land. Be it large or small, anyone can have a high yielding food forest that requires minimal input and maximum out put!
One key aspect of permaculture is creating great compost to feed your food forest. There are several ways to do this. Some use old techniques of compost bins and turning the piles, why others use chickens to do the turning for them while adding their nitrogen rich manure to the mix.
We use our rabbits to create a nutritious compost. Yes that's right! We raise our own backyard rabbits for meat and fur and the convenient by product is a nutrient dense compost we can use for our garden. In this video from our YouTube channel you will get a glimpse of this wonderful compost i like to call my "Black Gold"
I hope you enjoy and subscribe to our channel to follow us on our journey of growing a more productive garden and food forest on our Homestead!

It doesn't get delivered to us but we found a place on the other side of the mountain that allows us to dig up their alpaca manure...alpaca beans they are called. We go over and fill bags of it every spring and use it for the orchard and the gardens. It seems to be doing a great job, especially around the apple trees as top dressing.
We got 2 tons of apples last year that we were able to give to the local soup kitchen, the senior center and friends.
Praise the Lord!

Wow, thats awesome...you know thats not the first time Ive heard of alpaca poo bieng used for fertilizer with great results..you may be on to something there.. you should bag it and sell It!

We get it for free just for the work of bagging it up. It is doing so much for our gardens and orchard and we share all the results of our over abundance and give credit to the alpaca owner each year.
The owner told us that he is now giving it to a local nursery who will do that work and sell it.

Time to go fishing with all those extra worms! You're a bit south of me, fish biting? And not to be nosey, but do y'all home school?

Good stuff man. Thats one thing we are yet to get going is a good composting system. Better add it to my list!

Yes sir, you gotta be adding the good stuff on the regular if ya want to keep getting good stuff out!

So true. So far we've been feeding our waste to our animals and having our animals in the areas we want to garden. But yes, we need compost!

Who knew that worm poop would be such a valuable resource. ;)

Right on! I feed our worms coffee to keep them rockin & rollin 😎
