Carnage on the farm. Raccoons killed our chickens.

Last night about 10:30 - 11pm the dogs started barking. Usually when the dogs start barking is because we have vermin on our front porch. Usually it is a Opossum eating the outside cat's food. Occasionally like last night it was a raccoon. So I'm getting all excited I get to shoot something finally LOL. Well Bridget wouldn't let me grab the AR-15. She said that was over kill rolls eyes. So instead of course she runs to grab the 22. Meanwhile I open the front door so I can keep an eye on the raccoon. Seeing me step outside, the raccoon ran to the edge of the porch where it was cornered. Before Bridget made it back with the gun, the raccoon climbed up and over the wire fence and took off into the darkness getting away before she had a chance to shoot it. Boy are we regretting letting the fucker get away too. We left the gun on the table in the living room ready for if and when the raccoon came back.

Then this morning we get up and find this...

Oh that raccoon came back all right!!! And the dogs this time didn't make a peep alerting us. There were feathers everywhere... The inside of their coop was completely trashed. Grandma says there must of been a family of them. She said only a baby raccoon could of been able to squeeze through the side of the fence to get inside the coop and do this.

This one lonely hen was the only survivor. And she was tore up pretty bad.

Her back was all tore out. Her head was scarred up too covered in blood. As you can see she couldn't even open her eyes. She bairly moved at all when I picked her up out of the coop to get these pictures of her. Grandma put her in a cage inside the chicken house with the other chickens with her own food and water in hopes that she makes it.

For now we just cleaned up the coop and collected the dead bodies and disposed them. We lost 5 hens total and a few eggs that hadn't been collected yet.

Needless to say, I think Bridget will let me get out the AR-15 next time these raccoons come back LOL. Only next time I'm not going to be dumb enough to scare the fucker away before we can shoot it.

As always, I'm Theo aka Rainbow Man and here is the PROOF!!!

Dang. Raccoons are pretty tough on chickens. I can trap them fairly well, but every once in awhile I get a real hardcase one that understands mechanical traps.

The one thing I found that they don't understand is electricity.

The pen Grandma built isn't very secure. I'm surprised the one hen survived at all. Amazingly enough she is still alive. Grandma is planning on getting new chickens soon.

feeling so sad for that chicken.

After 2 days she is still alive. She has opened one of her eyes.
