Homesteading - Regrowing Your Veggies Update

in homesteading •  6 years ago

A while back I had wrote an article on how to regrow your veggies. I mainly focused on romaine lettuce, celery, onions especially green onions, potatoes, and pineapples. I wanted to do an update since we have been harvesting some of these already especially the green onions that we use on our eggs and baked potatoes.

Several of the celery have been harvested and we have several more in rotation to be harvested next in a couple weeks. These get eaten by us and the cuts that would normally be waste are either fed to the mealworms or tossed into the feed stock for the compost worms and the ball is replanted back into rotation for another harvest later on.

This has not only cut back on my cost of buying these items but also my cost of seeds and wait time on growth.

Around five buckets of green onions is all we can handle using and as you can see some of these are even past being cut and replanted since they grow back very fast. The celery we can usually keep around 30 buckets since it does take longer to regrow but not nearly as long as starting from seed. We also do more of these because we use them for my mealworms farm anytime we get extra that we don't use for ourselves.

We also pick out sprouted plants from my worm bins and plant into the buckets. Pepper plants always grow really well in the worm bins and also we have been having lots of mango seeds sprout in the bins that we have been moving into buckets to try and get a good start on. Usually we will have around 1 out of 5 celery that end up not regrowing and we just pull those out and put a new one in the bucket and get ready for the next harvest.
