Clearing over ridden garden of brambles

in homesteading •  7 years ago  (edited)

Hello Steemians, how is everyone today?
With regards to my earlier post about my 'sprouting tomatoes' and preparing my new garden for growing lots of goodies for me and the local wildlife, i started to tackle the tangled web of brambles that were taking over.
I'm not certain as to how long these bramble vines have been living here for,but it was like the film Jumanji with all the creepers!!!

So, i woke up early with the task in mind, prepared myself and got stuck into it.

Gloves on,fork in hand and lots of hard levering back and too. Some of the roots were right stonkers, if only they were award winning carrots i would be quids in right now :-)

After trying my best to get each plant out by the roots, one by one, i got closer and closer to reaching my daily goal.

Incinerator on and plenty of hydration for myself, i almost got them all. They put up a fight but i think i almost won.

They definitely came off worse ;-)

Two big piles of bramble awaiting my disposal,i would put these into a compost heap but am i right to believe they will travel over my garden again or will it be safe to put these onto a compost heap?

Looking better already😊

I've also set up a water butt from the water off the shed/garage roof. I have a second water butt but am not sure if i could somehow marry the two up, any advise would be very much appreciated.

There is only about an hours worth of bramble labour to go before the lot is cleared completely! Next on my list is to sow vegetables, herbs and some fruit indoors(already started with tomatoes and strawberries), as we are due more snow next week, compost heap, get some garden designs in mind, greenhouse up, possibly a fence to the right, grass seed down with flowers spread all over for the bees and butterflies...

My tomatoes are doing very well.

And my first sight of a strawberry shoot this morning.

I will post my progress as i get further down the line. Thank you for stopping by and any advice would be great too!!
Thank you.

You have a minor misspelling in the following sentence:

They definately came off worse ;-).
It should be definitely instead of definately.

Well thank you @grammarnazi :-)

Woth your waterbutt you want a pipe connecting between the 2 at an angle so the water flows down into second butt. You dont want it too low either.

Looking really good you've worked really hard

Okey dokey,i'll do that when we have a dry spell(heatwave yes please)dont want to lose the water i already collected, was using the bigger butt first but the tap off smaller one and was a tiny leak cos it wasn't sealed properly so the big butt is without tap at the moment, and had to lose lots of water from it to put on its side to put tap back on the smaller one and decanter the remaining water from the big one,it's all good fun though isn't it :-)

I had a right mare with mine! I placed rather heavy handily placed a rock in and it caused a crack. I need to silicone it I think but such a messy job =(

I may do it as a day time task tomorrow!

Did you silicone the crack?...the smaller water butt i have has a crack but was still holding water, before i swapped the tap over from the big one i had to gunk it but it is a messy job but somebody's got to do it haha

Yeah I did it! Made a right mess! Stupid things keeps blowing over

They will soon stop falling over after this rainfall we are getting!! Mind is over flowing xx

You did really well clearing all those brambles! I usually take mine to the tip, incinerating is another good idea, but I don't put them in the compost. You might be interested in water butt products and accessories from this company: https://evengreener.com. They quite often have offers. You probably have a similar supplier nearer to you, but the pictures are good for ideas 😊 Good luck with your growing, look forward to seeing progress.

Hello @shanibeer thank you for the information on that shop, I will have a look there in a second, also thank you for your good comment on clearing the little bliters! I enjoyed it really, didn't enjoy the scrapes on arms after but was too warm to cover up fully, it took a good few hours, but well worth it. There's a few still entwined, to the back under some grass... I'll get them tomorrow after work as there is a lot of rain and sleet due from Tuesday till next week. So that won't be so fun :-) I chose the incinerator to burn them too, got a gargantuan pile I dragged towards the house earlier, I'm still stinking of fire :-) will be posting about the things I have planted inside later in the week, thanks again
