I guess it's fall now! I just blew this porch off yesterday! It yielded half a bag yesterday, and today we're up to two bags... And it's just getting started. The trees don't look like they've lost any leaves at all. Good sign for us :)
I think leaf gathering is gonna be a daily chore for a while. It'll be a rewarding one for sure, and I think the kids will be particularly on board when we make them a giant pile to jump in and get all itchy.
These bags are a lot bigger than I thought they'd be. They came in a pack of 25 from Costco for ten bucks, which was a way better price than I saw on Amazon. The Amazon ones were $15-25 for a ten pack! I do think we'll pick up another pack at the store on Friday. Fifty bags should suit us fine, especially considering that we'll stash a bunch in piles all over the yard too. I also plan on stealing some from whatever neighbors I can.
We're up to fifteen comfrey plants now. I think we've been up to fifteen before, but there was a disaster when I was mowing like a drunk and hit a couple... Oh well. They'll grow back. I think. Here's our littlest one and our biggest. The little one wasn't there yesterday. It's up with the baby trees, planted in a spot where we lost one tree. The big one is by the long south bed.
Fifteen plants isn't bad. We planted thirty four, but I don't expect all of them will take.
We finished the evening by carving pumpkins with three shirtless weirdos. Sophie was devistated when a coin toss determined that we'd carve her design on Friday, so we satiated her request by carving a tiny punkin just for her.
Happy Halloween y'all! Hope you had a decent Monday :)
We can stack up to 100 bags that size, filled to the top, in an area (on pallets) measuring 10' x 8'. We stack them 2 and sometimes 3, high. In the barn, of course, so they stay dry and actually serve the purpose intended...
Glad your comfrey has done well, the ones that made it.
And loved the shot of your pumpkin carvers. If you don't eat the seeds, give them to the chickens. They help keep internal parasites in check...

I'm debating whether to store them in the shop or on a pallet in the chicken run, to make use of some of their unused vertical space. I think a hundred bags would be overkill for us, as our operation is way smaller than yours. Maybe one day though :) That's a whole lot of leaves in not a whole lot of space! That's great!
I actually took a small harvest of some of the larger comfrey leaves that had been broken by our recent rains. I tore them up and crushed them and put them under mulch around some of our small trees. Exciting to see things coming together piece by piece.
The chickens are all munching on pumpkin innards. I debated whether to put them in the compost or the chicken runs, but then I remembered that the chicken runs are compost too, so... :)

You'll be surprised how many leaves you will go thro. All our leaves are for the run, just 18 birds. I like to keep the ground covered, especially in summer when it gets so hot. It helps to keep the soil cooler.
