THE BLESSINGS OF GROWING IN A WARMER GROWING ZONE

in homesteading •  7 years ago

There were a lot of variables that we considered when we considering when we were making the decision to move to Arkansas.

One of the potential benefits to moving so far south was that we would be in a higher growing zone, which meant that we would be able to grow many plants that would not survive the cold Wisconsin winters. Additionally many of the plants that we enjoyed growing up in Wisconsin would still be able to be grown down in Arkansas, so we were definitely gaining more than we were losing.

Since one of our main goals in homesteading is to provide for the majority of our own food needs, we felt like this was a great step in the right direction.

SHARING THE BLESSINGS

Since we are acquiring large amounts of various fruit trees and other food-bearing plants, we love to share the blessing and encourage others. I've mailed a lot of seeds and plants to a variety of steemians, and was able to give some to @provider, @msgreenthumb, @grandpa-pepper, @paradise-found and others on this trip.

Interestingly enough, some plants and seeds came my way too!

COLD HARDY KIWI

Last year @msgreenthumb picked up a couple "Cold Hardy Kiwi" plants, that just were not cold hardy enough for the zone where she lives. While I was in town, she texted me to ask if I would like to give them a permanent home down in Arkansas. Since she still had one female that survived and her male plant too, I gladly accepted her offer.

"Cold Hardy Kiwi" plants produce a smaller, green-skinned variety of kiwi rather than the larger, fuzzy, brown ones. By growing my own "hairless" Kiwis at home, I can not only save money, but also save time shaving, which will be a huge bonus!

Thank you so much @msgreenthumb we will take good care of these plants! It is to bad that they did not work out for you, but we will gladly enjoy them.

BRUSSELS SPROUTS

While watching the eclipse in Missouri, some of our other friends from Wisconsin picked up some Brussels Sprouts seedlings. After contemplating how late in the year it was up here, they decided to give them to us instead. While we have no guarantee of a harvest this year either, we do have a better chance than they do, and we were happy to receive such a gift.

FREE SEEDS

It seems that every year there are a lot of free seeds flying around in some circles of gardeners. This is because stores are supposed to dispose of their inventory at the end of the season. Whether someone just knows someone, or someone raids a dumpster, somehow many of these seeds end up getting a second chance at growing.

While at the home of @provider this weekend, we managed to get our hands on some. With seeds like salad mix, cilantro, and spinach, many we can even plant this year and still get a harvest. Others, like sweet corn and okra, will have to wait until next year. Growing your own food can save money anyway, but when your seeds are free, it can be even cheaper!

Overall it was a wonderful time up here in Wisconsin, and we are just about to jump in the truck to drive back. Lord willing, we will be home in Arkansas before sundown and able to check up on all of our animals. It'll be so exciting to be back working on the homestead. It was a great break from all of the hard work that I have been doing, but we need to be progressing. Now, we even have more supplies for our future, and new ways to enjoy our longer growing season!

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

Just stumbled upon you and I must say I absolutely love everything you are doing! My partner and I moved to Thailand where we can grow pretty much anything and have big plans to also build a homestead. Upvoting and following you for all of your future posts! Can't wait to follow your journey and help support the great cause! Sending loads of love to you and your family! ❤️

Very cool! Thanks for letting me know!

Thanks for the tips about dumpster diving after seeds @papa-pepper ;) Going to night :D
Better to give the seeds a chance ;)

LOL - I wasn't exactly giving advice or suggestions.... just saying....

Your saying, becomes suggestions and tips. Thank you :)
I like your blog @papa-pepper. Trying to grow some sweet peppers hear in Noway, but this year on the wet coast it have been to humid for everything. My tomatoes get fungus and spread to other plants in my greenhouse. So now I prep for winter garden inside :)
Enjoy life @papa-pepper :)

I have gone dumpster diving many times. It's amazing what you can find. It's also saddening at what our stores just throw out, rather than giving it to the homeless.

Total agree with you @troyvandeventer

The cold hardy kiwi I grow up here in Ontario Canada. Thanks for sharing your post.

very good job great i love it

I never considered Arkansas to be 'south'.
silly me.

It touches Texas... So south for many.

Odd that...
I grew up on the Llano Estacado which is due west of where you are by a few hundred miles. I never considered it to be 'south'. I never actually considered Texas to be south. Texas is Texas...The south is east of Texas....(Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Florida)... strange huh?

@everettdmickey I agree with you, friend. Texas is just Texas. South is east of Texas and west is west of Texas. I grew up in the San Antonio area, and don't even consider that south!

Yup.
San Antonio is NOT "the south"....none of Texas is.
San Antonio is not even 'south texas'...
There's a whole lot of Texas south of san antone.

Interesting indeed.

good job boss

So envious of that climate!!

Well, if you ever get really envious, perhaps you will have to stop by.

Ah that would truly be a fine thing!

AWESOME !!! , great post buddy,, keep it @papa-pepper

@papa-pepper you make me laugh at your video... Do we really need to shave the KIWI and STRAWBERRY? Hihihihi... Because I would like to cut it into the middle then eat it using a teaspoon or table spoon the KIWI.
For the strawberry? Well, just wash it and eat it! Ahahaha... You are cute @papa-pepper. Ahahahaha... I enjoy your company and make me smile. Even though my blog is about food it is still connected to your blog. Hehehehe...
I love planting! Great contribute for planting. I would like to try planting KIWI inside of the house if it is possible to leave and to grow inside. What do you think? Any suggestion @papa-pepper.

Kiwi can grow VERY BIG, but you could try it in a pot for a while first.

You can check out this post for some more info on growing Kiwi from seed.

Wow, thanks! I will check it now and study!!!

Hi @papa-pepper, I was quite surprised to see a kiwi shaved. 😀❗️Never thought of that. Myself to clean kiwi I am using the vegetable peeling tool, or a small knife.
You may be laughing if I would tell you that I wont eat the kiwi if using shaving cream and raser. I guess is just my fix thing on my mind.
Anyway it was really a great video watching yours three methods to clean you kiwi fruit and strawberry.

Thank you for sharing with us! I hope you enjoy the upvote!

Always love papa-pepper's posts. Love gardening, or used to when I had one. Like hearing about what other gardener's are doing. I love Plumbago (lived for many years in Greece) and found a hardy version in the UK, it's not the pale fluffy blue I loved, but a sharp vibrant blue, still pretty. I even had a friend who grew the pale blue summer variety in her (long) porch as it got lots of sun! Good luck in Arkansaw. JV

Thank You Papa for sharing... Hope You had a safe trip back Home...

AND, Yes, it must be nice to receive Free Seeds when You have a HomeStead with a longer growing season.

Hope You & ALL the Peppers are having a Good Week...

Cheers !!

Thanks my friend.

LOL OMG the deadpan acting is primo! (makes me wonder just how many people are now going to be buying razors for their food!) Do we need to invest in the brand??

Yeah, the only reason that I could pull it off is that I was alone in a hotel room. I cannot even watch it with a straight face.

I am thinking you need to up the ante and get in a room full of people and master it, then you might just fit in with my bunch ;-)

Like the use of discarded seeds. So much waste in this country. Stores should discount and then give away their seeds at end of the season. This video is hilarious shaving kiwi's, watch those nicks.

Glad to hear that you liked the video.

hope the trip home wasn't too bad. I'll bet there was a continual "Are we there yet?" from the back seat. Get a couple of battery razors and some Kiwi's to shave, it should quieten the question for a while

Hello my friend! How I'm so happy reading this post today!
Well just some hours earlier I've planted herbs like cilantro, chives, celery, thyme etc. For the first time in coco peat bags!
I'll make a post on it later on, I hope it grows well.

Very cool! It is amazing to be so far away and yet experiencing the same things!

I am really inspired by this. For years I thought by not eating meat automatically made me a vegetarian, but in actuality I became a carbo-vore (completely just made that word up), because it seemed less expensive. Wrong Again! My "carb-buying" habits may have been easier on my pockets, but my body was getting taxed, BIG time. Seeing your post today brought a sense of courage to follow through with a healthier experience of feeding. Much appreciated and loved <3

Very cool! Thanks for letting me know!

I've never thought about seeds being cleared out. I'll have to ask around here about that.

Silly question here, but why do you do the 'proof' thing at the end of your posts?

It is kind of a running joke, but also it shows the authenticity of my posts and photos.

Nice post dear friend Up&Resteem

Top Farmers .

Great kiwi shaving ideas, I normally just peel the skin off and eat the insides. Perhaps am missing out on the nutrients in the skin. I will definitely try this. For the strawberries I like to eat them whole with the seeds :)

Thanks for sharing this type of post i likev ery much..
