WHY WE HOMESTEAD - PART 4 - SELF-SUFFICIENCY AND FINANCIAL GOALS

in homesteading •  7 years ago  (edited)

This is Part 4 of a new series.

Since we desire to live together as a family, the less money we need means the better chance I have of earning it from home. The more of our own needs that we can take care of on our own, the less money we will need to spend, which means the less money we will need to earn. A key aspect of homesteading is being more self-sufficient, so it fits well with our financial goals. Enjoy the video!

PART 4 - SELF-SUFFICIENCY AND FINANCIAL GOALS

Since being together as a family is our goal, we think that homesteading is a good fit for us. In Part 5, I will share about how being more self-sufficient will help us reach our financial goals. Stay tuned!

Really great post - and series. I hadn't considered that yes, for every $1 not spent it's more like $2 saved. I'm going to remember that!

Yup, that came from @me-tarzan, and I thought it was a very good point. Those taxes!

I could hear the ducks in the background and they sound very very happy
that sounds like a lot of eggs
I agree that homesteading can really make you self sufficient plus it doesn't only teach your kids to be the same but also make them love nature a lot - at least that's what I got having lived with my grandparents who were homesteaders
I don't remember buying much food aside from fish and clams and other sea food freshly caught in the sea when I was there - it saved us much money plus made us eat un-sprayed food - that's the best part - organic
the tasks - quite tough for my grandparents I think but during harvest time holy freaking moly happiness!

It is fun and rewarding, not only in lifestyle, but health too. We sure do enjoy it!

Well Bro another great post !
The reason I interact with you as much as I do or can is because you have an extreme love for family, friends, nature and life in general. You are what I have been calling a "Humane Being", imho what we ALL need to work on more.
This video briefly gets into the "economics" and your philosophy of "Homesteading". The term itself is so strange to me, as if it were something new. Imho, it just means living a life how "man/human beings" are supposed to live.
When you start getting into the math, the economics, and yes, profitability makes so much sense. But to be honest, I always have to laugh at the statement "saving 1 dollar is actually 2". It IS true !, But I don't like the math ... here is why.
Say you make $10 an hr. at a 9-5 job. Your away from family ....
Say you make $10 an hr. at home. Yes the math dictates you save on fuel, can make more money at home because you don't have travel to work time deducted from your money making time at home, save on food, by growing your own, save on babysitters etc. The list IS endless ... BUTTTT ! What is Not mentioned or included in the math, is the VALUE of spending time with your family. To me, spending time with kids is worth $1000's per hr. Plain and simple. How many men didn't get to see their children take their 1st steps OR say their 1st words !!! THATS just a damn shame ..

To me my man, YOU ARE VERY wealthy ! Your basic and advanced economics are "THE" way to go, lol !

AS usual, all my best to you and yours. Keep up the good work, and thanks again for showing people "how to" be .. a "Humane" being !

Your friend JTStreetman

Excellent point in all the extra "financial" stuff, but I especially liked this part:

What is Not mentioned or included in the math, is the VALUE of spending time with your family.

You are soooo right! Thanks for the encouragement once again!

What comes to mind when watching this series is the several passages in Proverbs that talk about the value of planning ahead, working hard (and smart), and the idea of a family working together to solve problems and make a life.

Very true! We do try to apply what we read!

Yea yes. Here in Wisconsin when I was a kid, me and my dog would go down to the woods. My dog would chase up rabbits. And when the rabbit tried to hide I could catch them by hand. Then I would let them go for another day.

Really interesting post and video @papa-pepper. Debt is a real killer and ultimately keeps people tied to jobs that are not fulfilling. People seem more interested in what is supposed to make them happy or what they are told to make them happy rather than really figuring out what actually makes them happy.

Consumerism rarely seems to offer much fulfillment. Buy one thing, discard it and then buy something else just to discard it. I find long lasting happiness does not require the purchase of stuff that initially feels appealing. In order to support this spending we are forced to sacrifice our time doing unfulfilling work. It just takes the courage to break this cycle.

It does take a lot of courage.

Very well said spectrum. Couldn't agree more, but I'm a rare lucky one who enjoys what I do for work. Doesn't mean I want to do it forever though.

well obviously i missed a lot having just jumped in first time with the part 4. But there is a lot of truth in what you are saying @papa-pepper. Thanks alot for the insights in what you are planning and i agree less money you need is absolutely more freedom especially with the interests that you mention in the last part ...
will watch the others now as well !
Thx
Jan

Glad to hear that you liked what you saw! I've got a few more coming!

Trying to build a homestead and it is hard to save when you are trying to build debt free.

That is true, but it's worth it!

Yes, it is! When it is all done then we start saving.

All very interesting and good reasons to make homesteading your goal in life. So it made me curios about how much I pay in rent for a year. It turned out I have to work 23 (40 hour) weeks a year to just pay my apartment rent. And 6 (40 hour) weeks to pay our utility bills a year. If I didn't pay for those I could have a piece of land in 3 years. Makes you think. but also if I didn't pay those I would be homeless.

Makes you think. but also if I didn't pay those I would be homeless.

That math sure was interesting, and your conclusion is worth contemplating too. Very, very hard to break free and get ahead these days.

Didn't help losing 7 days work because of hurricane Irma.

No kidding.

Nice video papa-pepper. I've been enjoying going through your posts and love that you're getting the message out there of a debt-free and simpler way of life. Not only is becoming more self sufficient saving you money, but so is finding the joys of a simple lifestyle. Great example you shared at the end in regards to interest: people don't think much already about the extra thousands of dollars an item may cost them beyond the ticket price in interest, but you're also giving up the time in your life (working to earn the money) to pay that interest. We live in an age, and a country, where people can have the big house (bigger house.... BIGGER house) a boat, ATVs, snowmachines (that's snow mobiles for you non-Alaskans) and STUFF in abundance. That stuff can be fun, but when you're gathering debt upon debt for all that, it's not worth it!

Although we're not homesteaders, my family likes to seek a more minimalist life-style than the norm. When you don't have all that "extra" you've got more time to spend together as a family. You can still have some of those extra things (or useful in practical ways, especially if you're homesteading), but with some patience and dedication it's much better to buy them outright than pay even more just to access that money sooner. Be patient, make wise decisions, and accept some compromise up front to result in a much happier, more satisfying life.

Good work pepper! Best wishes.

We live in an age, and a country, where people can have the big house (bigger house.... BIGGER house)

Yup, too bad so many fall into that trap...

BIG HOUSE
BIG CAR
BIG WIFE
little bank account

Hahaha "big wife".
And one big car isn't enough, come on now papa, gotta have multiple vehicles. One for you, the wife, each kid, the cats... and it's funny when someone says they found a good deal but went into debt. Uhhhh, I don't think you really know what a good deal is.

Ouch! That's the worst "deal" ever!

@aksounder - I'm also not a homesteader, but do fit more into the minimalist category you speak of. And, boy are you right about most people's mentality towards debt. I often thought that when i heard someone make comments about, oh they got a "Good deal " on something but they still charged it. Like, why couldn't you pay for it outright then? All the interest you end up accumlating negates the "savings "

Great video and post. Thx for sharing, as always

Thanks for checking it out!

Every dollar I don't have to pay the tax man is a dollar in my pocket. Being almost totally self-sufficient is a blessing. Teaching your children to also live a self-sufficient debt free live is truly worth it...

Yup, all I can do is teach them. They can choose otherwise if they want, but I've already "been there and done that."

Thanks man! I'll check it out!

Very wise “decrease cost of living to increase the quality of life.” Many seem to have it upside-down “increase the cost of living to decrease the quality of life.”

I know many people who moved to big city’s chasing after the big paychecks. They never been poorer in their life and rent along with food costs so high. That is no way to live life. Yet they still think it going work out they just need to "make a bit more." Where more is never enough.

More is never enough, just ask all of the broke actors and sports stars. No use climbing so high just to end up at the bottom, in my opinion.

My husband and I have strive to be debt free. We have very little debt and we are going to into a little but for our house build but it isn't much and is less than what rent costs. But we bought our land outright and if everything goes in with-in 10 years maybe less since each week here seems to be getting better and better, we will have what loan we are taking out paid back. In two years I should have my student loans paid off and then we will be able to apply that money to the house loan too. Would love to have all the debt paid off in 5 years instead of the 10 years we calculated it will take. My husband does work long hour shifts that are around 13 hours but he works a rotating shift so out of every 14 days he only works 7 days. 2 days on 2 days off 3 days on 2 days off 2 days on, 3 days off. Then it starts all over again. It is nice he was able to find a job like that, because before he found the job he has now, he was gone 60+ hours a week 5 days a week.
It sucked.

Those student loans tend to haunt people forever. The on some, off some work can be nice too. I've had some similar schedules to that of your husband in the past.

He likes it, the pay is decent and the benefits are pretty good and he gets 5 weeks of vacation pay a year now since this past year, he has been there long enough to go from 4 weeks to 5 weeks. Sometimes because of repairs they have shut downs, he saves most of it for when they have shut downs, and what ever is stockpiled at the end of the year he takes in the Month of December, which is really nice, because not only is it Christmas time but two of our children have birthdays that same week one on the 27th and another on the 31st.

Great mindset and attitude.

It needs a lot of creativity and courage to do it.I like this a lot.

This sustainable way to live is my goal in life!!

Maybe I can reach this one day :-) (That's why I'm considering a move to Denmark, Netherland or Sweden, countries that many people already live by this mindset in large scale.)

I'm working on it every day.

"...you're supposed to be a cash cow for others.." This is what they want for us, but they will not succeed if more people think like you. Congratz

Wish you and your family Success @papa-pepper

I wish I had worked towards becoming debt free much earlier in my life. Knowing what I do now. But I had a different mindset back then. I'm debt free today and will never go back to that old life of working but nit owning anything.

Years ago, when my kids were teenagers I would explain to them how long they would have to work for a (blank) purchase. They had jobs but never broke down how many hours they would have to work to pay for something. Two of them got the message but I still have one that thinks in payments. They will never be out of debt, never and that saddens me.

the problem is that while people earn more money, it spends even more, that is, is not limited to buying any item or food, well that happens here in Venezuela. I have always said that one should think ahead and not only live from the present, because in life there are good and bad moments and when you do not have a plan for bad times, you are really going to have a bad time, take precautions in the monetary sense because if you work in the trade you have to keep in mind that it is a very unstable world

Your rabbit is very cute, I like rabbits.

Yup, they are very cute!

Haha! Yeah the rabbit is very cute. i was thinking That the whole time and also, hope he doesn't eat that one! 😉
