TRANSFORMATION COMPLETE - Gardening

in homesteading •  6 years ago  (edited)

With all of the boxes and tables constructed it is now time to transform this area into a more manageable garden. As you can see in the picture, this area is a mess. The biggest problem is that the boxes are on the ground, and that requires a lot of bending and kneeling to maintain this area. Another major problem is, with the boxes being on the ground the slugs have a feast. All pests in our garden are eradicated mechanically. The slug problem is addressed every morning by going around and snipping them with a scissor. Raising these boxes off of the ground will solve both issues, bending and kneeling, and the slugs.
The boxes and tables were built several days ago.

With all of the boxes and tables transported to the back garden, it's time to get busy.

IMG_2814.JPG

The first step is setting the tables perfectly level. Blue-stone has been placed under each leg so that the table doesn't sink into the ground.

With the 2nd table set, the existing boxes that were on the ground will be placed on this platform.

Filling the boxes with soil is a rather expensive proposition, but once they are filled the real work is over.
We purchased all organic raised bed soil, organic top soil, and some organic mulch from our mulch pile. The rototiller makes easy work of this job.

With the boxes filled, it is time to start working on the ground.

This garden was built around 15 years ago, and the tree stump with the round table top on it, is no longer in the plans, it will have to be removed. We also plan on redoing the rock walls that encompassed this area.

IMG_2828.JPG

Even with the stump being rotten, it still provided me with some great exercise.

Rock walls removed, good workout

Rock walls rebuilt around this section.

Another stump bites the dust.

After leveling off the ground, we placed landscape cloth over the soil. No more weeds. 😁

Now the fun part, dressing up the ground with mulch.IMG_2862.JPG

If you've got the time, I'm going to add a little sidebar about the mulch. Being a wood worker, it is wonderful to have a sawmill 13 miles from our farm. This place is the best, and I feel like a kid in a candy shop every-time I go there.

The mulch comes from the remnants of the milling process.
They mill only softwoods, which means that all of the mulch comes from conifer trees, or pines.
This is a picture I snapped off on the way into Beardsley's Sawmill.
These logs represent just of a fraction of the rounds they have on location.

At $17.00 for two bucket loads, you can't go wrong. My truck is puking.
I think I should bring a load down to New Jersey with me every time I go.
Could probably sell for $100.00, that would pay for the gas.

IMG_2853.JPG

Sorry, if you're still with me, back to the garden.

I didn't realise how much work you were going to do. You are a machine, but the results speak for themselves so really worth the effort. The garden looks so different and very handy having a sawmill fairly close by.

@cryptoandcoffee thanks for taking the time to look at this post and for taking the time to reply.
Being retired now, very few things fall into the work category. I have coined my own word for everything I do here on the farm. All activities are looked at as being hobbitational, once they start to feel like that 4 letter word, it is on to the next activity.
Its great having the sawmill nearby.
Most of the wood they cut is Eastern Hemlock. I have used this type of wood for countless projects, as it stands up great to the elements.
Many of the barns in this area were built back in the mid to late 1800's and are still standing today. They have all been constructed using this very durable lumber.

This is a project I did last year using Hemlock.
The outdoor shower and slop sink provide much relief for the indoor shower when all of the family visits.

On top of reducing the line for showers, I make a couple of bucks. 😁

Oh man, what a project, the transformation is incredible, I love how everything looks so clean and how it turned out, all this hard work sure paid off, thanks for sharing!

Being retired, very few things fall into that 4 letter category any longer.
Once it starts to feel like w--k, as they say in the trades, Its time to drop the belt!

My Pleasure ot visit, I am just a little less than a year from retirement and looking forward to dropping that four letter word from my vocabulary :)

If your doing it for the pleasure your right it isn't that four letter word at all :)

A year from retirement @tattoodjay that is great. As the time approaches it gets even more exciting,.

Yes indeed, starting to plan what I want to do with my free time when I retire and slowing myself down at work so the change isnt to drastic LOL

@ferrate thanks for your very gracious comment.
Gardening is such a peaceful way to spend free time.
When you start your own garden, the pleasures are endless, especially when you get to harvest something you grew with your own hands.
