OLD BARN № 019

in homesteading •  6 years ago  (edited)
This lovely white barn of clapboard constrution is in southern Pickens County, SC, very close to the shared line with Anderson County on US Highway 178. It is another of the many barns we passed en route to Rainey Hospice House.

There is nothing but an enormous field behind/beside the house, which is always well-mown. I'm not sure if the owner simply keeps it regularly mowed for appearances, or whether he lets it grow enough to harvest it for hay. The view below, from Google Maps, "Satellite View" shows the property. Old Barn № 019 is the structure with the circle around it, and the owner's house is below-left of the barn. The two structures in the rectangle are are two more barns on the adjacent property — one very old, and one newer — visible from the road but too far away to photograph well (except with a big telephoto lens, or permission of the property owner to get closer). It's amazing how large those grassy fields are!

There was a tall creosote pole with an area-light on it in front of the barn when I made my photograph, so I used my PaintShopPro™ software to remove it with editing. There was also a power-transmission tower in the distant background behind the barn which I also edited-out. This is what the original looked like:

It would have been lovely to have had the leisure to pause along the roadway and capture a photo similar to what shows in Google Maps "Street View" as seen below. However, this is a relatively busy highway, so that would have been somewhat dangerous; I was lucky to have been able to stop long-enough to snag the shot I got!

Oh every time you make a barn post.. my heart just fills up. Having lived in a very rural farming community for decades, I love seeing these old structures.

That is a nice one, that barn looks right out of the '20's or '30's. taking the pole out made it really a nice shot.

I'm always fascinated by these kind of places <3 Sometimes I'm in the train and suddenly see a building I had never seen before - it suddenly intrigues me :-)

I love how you give so much information in your posts!!

Thanks for sharing with us about this cool barn. I like all of the different perspectives and views you gave us. Keep sharing and only stop as long as it is safe!

Great place.
