How To Transplant Mango Seedling From the Seed of the Mango You Ate

in homesteading •  7 years ago  (edited)

Good afternoon, Steemians!

About 20 minutes ago, I went outside. I noticed there were some very dark purple leaves coming out of the grass close to the compost pile in one my banana circles. I instantly recognized the leaves as mango leaves. One of the mango pits is literally thrown into the compost pile about a week earlier had begun sprouting! I've noticed mango pits are super easy to get sprouted, so I just threw it outside like I've done in the past!

I knew the roots wouldn't be very deep, so I just took a shovel head and stuffed it into the ground underneath the roots and pull that sucker up.

Here's a close-up of the seed sprouting

I dug a hole in a more open area of the yard

Then I carefully placed the seedling into the hole and began to fill it back up with good compost and cow manure

Then, I spread mulch over top of the ground area and watered it pretty well

I think this is our fourth mango that I planted now in the yard. The sad part is, I don't remember what variety this seed came from. It was either one of those like normal mangoes you get that's kind of rounded at the store, or it was the thinner Asian Ataulfo variety. I've eaten many mangos in the past week so I won't know until it starts to give fruit. It's kind of like I had a child and I don't know the sex yet. Hahaha....

All right guys, thanks for stopping by.

You are so fortunate to live in a place that can grow those types of fruit. I may have to renew my dream to buy some land in Florida and start a fruit forest!

I've only been here ~2 years. Used to live in Illinois. Dodged a huge bullet by moving out of that dreadful state. Don't get me wrong I loved the state for hiking and going to like state parks, and of course I have family there, but the gov't doesn't know what the F they're doing in IL. Haven't passed a balanced budget plan in 3 years.

I grew up in Idaho and lived in Washington State for almost a decade. Now I'm in the UK. Ready to live somewhere warm with long growing seasons. Which part of Florida are you in?

I'm in SW Florida, Lee County to be more specific. :) We had one day last year it got down to 38 degrees F. lol

That isn't too bad at all. Here in England it rarely gets above 70.

Thank you for sharing your tips

Great tips!

@vegansilverstack, I have 4 mango saplings ready to go into the ground this fall. I love planting the seeds and seeing how long it takes to come up. Great pictures. Thanks

Awesome! I love planting what will one day become great trees that are going to feed me!

Mango's are a delicious fruit - I add them to our smoothies every now and then.

Fun Factoid: "Mango trees grow to 35–40 m (115–131 ft) tall, with a crown radius of 10 m (33 ft). The trees are long-lived, as some specimens still fruit after 300 years."

Oh my goodness! Sounds like the perfect fruit tree!

ami me encanta plantar mucho

A mí también... y es muy fácil... la mayoría de la gente no sabe cuán fácil es hacerlo :)
