The Best of Homesteading

Things really get going on the allotment in April, as the days lengthen and temperatures rise. There are lots of jobs to do, including sowing, planting and weeding.

I got the Potatoes in the ground, I went for Maris Piper’s for my main crop. I was thinking about not planting Potatoes this year but how could I resist? they’re so easy to grow.

The Carrot seeds I sowed are coming along well and should be ready to be thinned out in the next few weeks. I’m still using up the free seeds from the magazines I have so far planted Runner Beans, Broad Beans and Peas that are starting to show signs of growth. I also sowed some Radishes that I got gifted. I have sowed rows in weekly intervals to maintain I steady crop. We have also sowed Kale, Fennel, Spinach and I have plants that need transporting down to the allotment from home that I will start moving down in May. I also planted some Sunflower seeds that are great for pollinators. 🐝

The Rhubarb is growing well that I’ve been harvesting and using. My cousin Julie-Ann makes great Rhubarb and Strawberry sauce. I’m going to start making some Rhubarb Gin next week.

The next big project is building a greenhouse, we have been given some glass from Rod at the allotment he is going to help me build it which should make a big difference to growing this year and the years to come.
