Planting Broadbeans Outside and Planter Preperation - The Container Garden With PumpkinsandCats

in homesteadingonline •  7 years ago  (edited)

Today was a very busy day in the Garden.

I couldn't wait any longer to prepare a planter as the Broadbeans are ready for planting and thankfully it was blue skies and sunshine albeit a bit cold.

I went to my local garden centre and bought 2 x 50 Litre Organic Compost However I only used one for the planter

Usually I riddle the compost however I only broke it down this time using a gardening fork. However for my other planters I will riddle in the Summer especially for things like carrots.

Next I positioned the plants where I want them in the planter. The great thing about using biodegradable toilet roll planters is I can just plant directly into the soil without having to turn them out.

To try and stop the cats from using them as litter trays, last year I made some mesh lids from chicken wire and a small expandable trellis.

I continued onto the other planters and emptied them it was a now or never kind of moment. Hense all the bin bags full of old compost.

Thats it the first vegetables of 2018 are out in the Garden = D

This is awesome. What other plants could this planting technique work for

With regards to the containers? I grow pretty much anything I want just not super long carrots!

Yes... Thanks.. I'll try cowpeas

Last year we lost some things (eg potatoes) to frost in April (!)... so I was wondering if you're planning to put some of that agricultural fleece to protect them a bit...

My beans always seem to be alright, I say with bated breath. By getting them out early I hope they harden up early. They seem to be relatively hardly anyway.

Bated, yes. Baited, no. I've taken to rewarding correct instead of common usage from time to time. You caught me at the right moment.

Trust me, I'm a doctor.

And it begins!! Great that you can plants out already. I have to wait until first week of June..... =(

I wont have much else out for a while. I am hoping for a early start might pay off might not.

You are my hero. I had an opportunity to build a house vs buy a flat and I went for it. I am thankful for my choice but I don't have the time to do what you do. And I am envious of you, since it's something I would like to do. In 10 years time I plan to start up a BIO/GREEN farm with an orchard. Great work!

That sounds awesome, i'd love to move somewhere with a bigger garden. Thank You for your kind words

How and why do you riddle?

Trust me, I'm a doctor.

My mom had a garden as well and she loves spending time in it planting different types of veggies and fruits. She finds it therapeutic. Sometimes she spends an entire day cleaning and watering the plants. And, the stuff which comes out her garden tastes heavenly.

I love the idea how to protect your crops from cats using it as a liter spot. Very nice idea. I will talk to my mom about adding it to her garden as well. :)

Great post. Thank you for sharing. :)

Gardening is so therapetic. My Mum says the same also.

Yes my cats are rather habitual poopers in planters most frustrating!

That mesh lid is a great idea. I'll have to make one myself once we get our new house sorted and I can start gardening. My dog loves to weed the garden and planters but she can't really tell which plants I actually want to keep. :-D

My put wooden post border to protect my flowers from the dogs feet!

I will have to nail them down a bit when the wind starts up though!

The only yield I got from my garden is this (from last year):

I have a huge tomcat that thinks it's a molerat, digging its way all over the garden for mice, fore and hind legs included. I brought in black forest soil because the soil here is clay and only sustains weeds.

I was sure you had a dog after listening to your stories :)

Your raspberrys look amazing!

They tasted amazing, too!
100% green, BIO,but probably including cat fertilizer :D

You always have the best gardening pics!
Look at all those plants thriving!

Oh my thank you! Meant to be having a cold snap soon! Will have to closh them =D
