We have an interesting situation where Matt Gaetz will need Democratic votes to oust Kevin McCarthy as speaker (because most GOP House members still support McCarthy), but McCarthy will need Dem support to remain in power (because there are enough GOP rebels that he can’t get a majority without help from at least some Dems). Media reports suggest both Gaetz and McCarthy are negotiating with Democrats. Will there now be a bidding war in which two Republicans try to win over Dems? Neither can give the Democrats too much, since it would sink their Republican support.
If it were up to me (it’s not!!), I say the Dems should demand an immediate vote on Ukraine aid as the price of their support, plus votes on adjustment acts for Ukrainian and CNVH migrants in the US (granting them permanent residency).
I think the Dems may actually demand the former, but probably not the latter.
