Gentrification of Neighbourhoods is Causing Homelessness in Toronto

Here is an article about what is happening to Parkdale in Toronto as has happened elsewhere in this city.

It is often where artists are re-located that a rapid process of gentrification starts to happen in a neighbourhood, with boutiques and small business following suits. Next thing you know the longtime residents of an area are ousted due to extreme hikes in rents and high prices of food. With a housing crisis looming in Toronto, these people have no where to turn. Back in the day there used to be rent-controls and everyone was happy even the landlords, although not as wealthy as now, could sleep peacefully at night knowing they were providing a service while still doing well themselves. Now with no rent controls, everyone feels obliged to keep spiking the rents due to extreme greed and probably these same landlords suffer from insomnia, knowing they are contributing to homelessness.

Same goes for food. When there were smaller food companies, and healthy competition between them and food price controls, Toronto had a healthy middle class, people who could afford to own a home and still eat and vacation once a year. Not any more, since food chains became conglomerates. Now there is virtually no middle class and people have to choose between eating and having a roof over their heads.

Is all that greed worth it for the well-to-do? Not really, because then they start to live in stressed communities with unhappy people, that must also take a toll on their own happiness as we are not an island but need to live among others, we are a society. And if a few are crippled, it is like a few rotting apples, the disease spreads, in this case unhappiness and anger and turmoil. Marie Antoinette in France told them to eat cake when she was told that the people had no bread, and a revolution occurred. We are headed in the same direction, Canada despite all the political correctness.
