We all know that the Internet is the place to find the most stupid and funny conspiracies,while some of them are just ignorant.
It's quite simple, if you only ask your self:

Would the conspiracy affect the richest and most powerful people?

If you find your self answering yes,then it is probably NOT true

We will now test it on three examples.

Number one:

The cure for cancer is already found but it is kept hidden because it would destroy the profits of Big Parma.
Do really rich people die of cancer, like might enough say the former CEO of Apple? Yes?
There isn't a super massively hidden cure for cancer.

Number two:

Chemtrails the conspiracy is all about planes spraying the general public with crazy chemicals in order to mind-control us,keep us obedient or whatever crazy reason anyone has come up with.

Hmmm.who else breathes air?Yes,world leader,billionaires and everybody else.
Chemtrails are not real,come on people.

Number three:

Apocalyptic conspiracy theories.This planet is coming to it's end because of mayan prophecies,the devil,a comet,nuclear war or an act of God. So the ones that do know the truth just choose to ignore it? Do nothing about it?
The world will not end soon.We have at least a few hundred years more to make fool of ourselves

Yes,those rules might not apply to all the theories out there but you can at least debunk the most stupid ones.

I agree a rule of thumb is that people don't do crimes that hurt themselves, but just because it looks like the suspect would get hurt does not mean the possibility of a plot is debunked. Just for fun here is a mildly plausible scenario that could includes all three of your examples without affecting the rich.

Create horrible apocalyptic virus that gives the victims fatal cancer.
Create vaccine. (or alternatively the cure for cancer and only use it to save the elite in ways that would not be obvious. Let some die..or give less than fully effective doses so the chemotherapy can be blamed for the improvement. This strategy was used in WWII when allies only fully or partially saved some convoys despite knowing of every german encrypted attack order)
Wait for war that can not be won conventionally.
Use planes to spray the populations of all nations on your side of the war. Double check anyone important gets the vaccine. (I doubt any vaccine though can be effective delivered this way but...sake of argument I guess)
Release virus to win war.
