Tanti anni fa, quando cercavo di costruirmi uno slide (bottleneck) di vetro per la chitarra, una mia amica mi disse:
"Guarda che ci metterai una vita a tagliarlo con una lima. Piuttosto, prendi un filo di lana, imbevilo nella benzina e, dopo avergli dato fuoco, buttalo in un secchio d'acqua. Lo shock termico taglierà perfettamente il collo della bottiglia".
A distanza di tempo, e dopo aver verificato ulteriormente con diversi tutorial su Youtube, oggi posso dire che questa tecnica effettivamente funziona.

Many years ago, when I was trying to build a glass bottleneck to use as a guitar slide, a friend of mine told me:
"It's going to take you years to shape it with a file. Take instead a wool string, soak it in some gasoline and, after setting it on fire, throw it in a bucket with cold water. The thermal shock will perfectly cut the bottle neck".
Today, after checking the procedure with some tutorial on Youtube, I can say that this technique does work.

Ma andiamo con ordine. La tecnica, letta così, è semplice, ma perché effettivamente sia efficace occorre prestare attenzione ad una serie di particolari.

Let's see, step by step. This technique is simple, but to be effective you need to know some details.

Il secchio d'acqua - Water bucket

Il secchio d'acqua deve essere il più freddo possibile. Quindi è consigliabile riempirlo il più possibile di cubetti di ghiaccio. Io ho usato dei contenitori di latte in Tetrapack per creare dei grossi cubi.

The water in the bucket must be as cold as possible. Better put as many ice cubes as possible. I used some milk containers to freeze some big cubes.

Non preoccupatevi: le galline non fanno parte dell'esperimento. Sono solo delle curiosone.

Don't worry: chickens will not take part of the experiment. They are just extremely curious.

Il filo di lana - Wool string

Se avete a disposizione un classico filo di lana è bene girarlo su se stesso per almeno tre volte, altrimenti la quantità di benzina che assorbe non sarà sufficiente a sviluppare un calore abbastanza elevato.

If you have a common wool string, better turn it around the bottle at least three times, otherwise the amount of absorbed gasoline will not be enough to heat the glass.

Un piccolo trucco che agevola l'operazione consiste nell'annodare le tre spire per poi immergere il tutto in un tazzina contenente benzina (o qualsiasi altro liquido altamente infiammabile, come l'alcool).

A little trick that helps, is to make the knot before and than soak all the string in a little cup with gasoline (or some other extremely inflammable liquid, such as pure alcool).

La sicurezza prima di tutto - Security first

Prima di dare fuoco al filo di lana, assicuratevi di non avere benzina sulle mani. Meglio usare un paio di guanti impermeabili mentre si maneggia la benzina e successivamente cambiare guanti o lavarsi molto bene le mani.
Ovviamente l'intera operazione è da farsi all'aperto, in un luogo dove non ci sia rischio di incendio.

Before setting the wire on fire, make sure not to have gasoline on your hands. Better use a waterproof pair of gloves while touching gasoline and the wool wire, and then change gloves or wash carefully your hands.
Obviously the whole operation is to be done open-air, where there's no risk of starting a blaze.

Una tecnica a tentavi ed errori - A trial and error technique

Dopo aver dato fuoco al filo di lana, aspettate che il fuoco stia per estinguersi e poi lanciate la bottiglia nel secchio. Se si sente un schiocco secco significa che avete avuto successo.
Il taglio segue l'andamento del filo di lana e quindi tanto più preciso l'avete disposto, tanto più lineare risulterà il taglio.
Un aspetto interessante di questa tecnica è che il taglio, avvenendo per shock termico, resta piuttosto definito, senza lasciare punte taglienti.
E' sicuramente una tecnica da provare e riprovare finché non si ottengono i risultati desiderati.

After setting the wire on fire, let the flame extinguish and then throw the bottle in the ice bucket. If you hear a crack, it means you succeeded.
The cut follows the wool wire, that means the more precise you set it, the more linear the cut will be.
An interesting feature of this technique is that the cut, as a result of a thermal shock, will be pretty well-defined, without any sharp and cutting spikes.
It's a technique to be tried over and over until reaching the results you desire.
