Disclaimer!

This may come to a shock to many of my followers that watch my videos and read my posts and think that Old Guy sure is one manly man! Well, let me tell ya, back in my younger days, I used to do a fair bit of wrenching. I used to do a fair bit of a lot of things, but we wont talk about that lol. So as we age some of the stuff isn't as much fun as it once was. In them olden days, I didn't mind much getting my hands a bit dirty now and again, but now its not something I look forward to...but hey, ya gotta do what ya gotta do. So this is a long ways of saying, I am no master plumber. If you don't know, or are not sure what to do, call a professional and don't rely on my silly post lol. This is just put up for entertainment purposes! Now that is another way of saying, don't even think of suing my ass if you get hurt!

The Problem

So this was the view that met me when I got home last night. Yeah you know right off when you see a leak its either going to be a costly call to a plumber or an adventure in not having fun! The problem was the water heater was leaking from the P&T valve. The P&T valve is plumber talk for the Pressure and Temperature valve that is located near the top on the side of the heater. Its kind of important because if it fails, its basically like a bomb! If you never saw the Mythbusters episode about it, you should...its only a few minutes:

This is the value that was constantly dripping on the floor. It started off slowly, but as a few days went by, it was getting worse!
Of course the first thing you need to think about is safety. I turned off the power to the water heater and all of the outlets nearby.

I then thought I best turn off the water valves lest I get a face full of scalding hot water to the face!
Next I removed the copper pipe that lets the water drip at floor level. Was pretty easy...

I drained a bunch of water out of the heater. This is a shot of the new valve. Not bad for $15!!!

The old valve had a fair bit of corrosion on it. I put in the new valve and to my surprise, NO LEAKS!!! The whole job went smoother than I would have guessed. I would rather spend $15 than what a plumber would have charged!!!

Great job. And glad we don't get to see a video of your holding onto the thing in a bear hug, launched half way across Michigan like the one on the airstrip. THAT would be a ride. Especailly that first part through the roof.
Thanks for the view and discussion on how to save a bunch of money on home repair. Gotta love it. Cheaper, and you know it's done right. I've had some real bozo's work on my house. I really liked the easy to see photos of the job. Have a nice night.

I agree with the cheaper part. Now the done right part might just be a stretch LOL!

Hey, once me and my friend tried it, he burnt his arm and me my beard. LOL.. Never tried it after that!!

OUCH!

LOL good story!
Upped

LOL. First we shocked from the little explosion and flash, then started to laugh looking at each other and called the plumber!

Yes indeed...stick with math...its less dangerous LOL!!!!!!

You are absolutely right my dear friend @old-guy-photos!

I would've flooded the house...and I would've burnt myself and shocked myself too....are you for hire? LOL

Trust me its a miracle it didn't leak! In fact I keep going back in there to check on it LOL!!!

Super tutorial. I will follow your blog because these are the tutorial like this one that will attract people on Steemit. Very good work, continue

Excellent work dear friend @ old-guy-photos, thank you very much for sharing all this information
Have a great day

Such a handy man. That is quite a savings, congratulations. I like that you used to "do a fair bit of wrenching". The video makes me want to go disconnect my water heater. I yi yiiii.

Impressive! You're braver than I... I don't mind carpentry, roofing, sheetrock and such... but I just don't go where electricity and water meet! That's for professionals... which, clearly, you must be.

Well I'm glad you can fix it. Plumbers charge alot. Stay safe.
