Good morning everyone!! It's a glorious Saturday and I've been super lazy so far. π
If not why not? π€ It is Saturday after all! I've decided that I needed to do at least one productive thing today, aside from a load of laundry or reading my book that is.. π
Did you know that we have one shop on our rock that sticks Ouma Rusks and at the hellishly expensive price of Rs275 per box which roughly equates to about R110 converted to South African rands.π π± Now don't get me wrong I'm a huge Ouma Rusk fan but R110 is a tad exorbitant for my pocket as life here is already not cheap at all.
Well this morning I decided I'm going to (try) bake some 'karringmelk beskuit', (buttermilk rusks) with a pinterst recipe I found online and fill my I LOVE OUMA tin with that and pretend it's real OUMA Rusks. π
For those who don't know Rusks are a cultural thing. π My mom and grandma used to stand and bake for hours and fill the containers so we have some for a quick breakfast snack or a late afternoon coffee and rusk experience. I have not baked in ages. I guess it's about time.

The Recipe and Process
Recipe not my own. I got it from pinterest
Get the ingredients and utensils together
Mixing the oil and eggs and then adding the buttermilk, which I made by adding vinegar to some milk to make it go sour
Sieve all the dry ingredients together
Real butter is the best
First rub the butter into the dry ingredients and then add the wet mix kneading it by hand
It should look like this
Roll some balls and put them in the baking pan to bake for about 45 minutes
My rusks are now in the oven. Once it's baked we need to break it apart and then let it dry out for about three hours at 120Β° or overnight. It's quite the process to make but it's well worth the effort.
Once it's dried out it's and perfect accompaniment to a lovely cup of tea or coffee. πβ
