One step seeding with cost effective germinating sponge

in hydrophonics •  7 years ago

Non-GMO, herbicide-free seeds are expensive. Thus, yield is important.

In hydroponics, I use net pot and a support media to hold each plant so that they could have proper support with only roots inside the solution.

There are many support media in the market from Leca, rock wool, etc. I chose germinating sponge as it is more economical and giving similar result. Leca is loose thus difficult to hold small seedlings. The media is not recyclable; thus, recurring cost is important. It is about $0.02 for a 2" cup size.

My most difficult process step in growing in hydroponics is transferring the seedling to the growing systems. With the pre-cut germination, it is easy to drop the seed into the sponge, partially soak for germination, then dropping the same sponge into the net-pot; thus, a simple one step transfer.
