Jesus against hypocrisy: Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. Matthew 15:6

Jesus teaches us that it takes a well-predisposed heart to receive the word of God. People who appear to lead a life of mercy, often harshly criticize the faults of others, that is why Jesus responds to the hypocrisy of the Pharisees and the doctors of the law when they find their disciples at fault:
"Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, ´Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don't wash their hands before they eat!´
Jesus replied, ´And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? For God said, ´Honor your father and mother´ and ´Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.´ But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ´devoted to God,´ they are not to ´honor their father or mother´ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:
´These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
They worship me in vain;
their teaching are merely human rules.´" Matthew 15:1-9.

Handwashing (Leviticus 15:11) was a religious tradition that the Pharisees considered as important as the Law of Moses, for the doctors of the law the impurity of the hands was transmitted to the food, making the person unclean. Then Jesus answers his enemies that they commit a worse fault and that they have no authority because they transgress the law itself.
Hypocrisy has no justification, Jesus explains to us, small faults do not make a person bad, it is the intention that comes from the heart that saves us or condemns us: "A person may think their own ways are right, but the LORD weighs the heart" Proverbs 21:2.
