The National Railway Museum in York.....A fine institution

I complain a lot about the UK and I left these shores permanently 7 years ago, but an enforced long term stay back here has made me look a little more objectively and see the positives for which the citizens of the UK should be thankful for.

One of these things, are Museums and the fact that the national museums are incredible places to hang out and even better, are free to get in!! That's right I said free. Ok, admittedly paid for out of government taxes but still a better way for the government to spend our money than some of the crap they spend it on...

Anyway, to feed my borderline Asperger train obsession, I took a trip to the National Railway Museum in York. Here is their official website.

It's full of trains, railway history, clocks, engines, station stuff....loads of stuff to keep me wandering around for hours. There is also a research centre and a resource library where you can find anything you want about British railways and their history.

It's housed in some old railway engine sheds and buildings as York was at one time a huge railway centre in the UK.

That is just sooooo 1930's !! You real feel like you've been transported back in time!!

I've never been much of a history fan, but as I've got older, I perhaps realise more the importance of the past in shaping the future and hanging around old stuff seems to evoke a wonderment and appreciation of the difficulties of the past and in this case, the huge advances in Engineering.

This is Mallard, the fastest Steam locomotive in the world ever. Back in 1938, it achieved a speed of 126mph....using steam! 165 tonnes of metal, running on a little track. Amazing!

Time for me to be an anorak.....I used to be a trainspotter in the 80s, oh lord forgive me...but there's a problem with this pic....There were never any electric class 87 engines at Paddington Station...that kind of spoiled the effect for me lol...

Anyway, its a good day out if you're ever in York and there are loads of stuff to keep the kids amused too.

Now my nasty streak comes out...if you don't send me lots of upvotes, I will post loads of pics of trains and bore the whole community to death with train numbers, timetables and facts and figures about trains. I will bore this community into submission, the price of steem will dump and the world might end....you have been warned ;-)

Pretty cool. Nyc had lots of free museums and things. St Louis too, we have a bunch off free things like an awesome zoo, science center, museum.

Oh thats is cool cos most stuff like that here you have to pay big dollar for. Its just a few of the national museums that are free. Hope youre doing ok there mate :-)

The museum looks like an awesome place to go, I am partial to trains, my father collects toy trains. Very good pics and by all means bore me with more train pics...lol because I love them. Great post

Toy trains ??? how dare you? They're models not toys !! ;-) I can see I need to educate the fine community members lol

Please, school us!

That Mallard is beautiful, what an amazing piece of engineering.
I laughed about the Paddington thing. I had a boyfriend like that. It ddn't last.

Hahahaha.....I can understand that...I've always had relationship 'issues' lol ;-)

First photo made me think about the Harry Potter books (and movies). Just seems magical!

Other than that, I love traveling by train (even though my longest train ride is just 2 hours long - from the capital (where I live) to my parents' place (and ofc vice versa) and the trains are way more modern than those on the photos). I mean there's more room in buses, there's no traffic and the view is just beautiful!

It used to be such a romantic way to travel in the 30s and 40s I guess.....

I wouldn't mind traveling back in time for free. At least that is what I feel when I go to museums, temples/structures/ruins of old that still exist today or just knowing about history.

That's a good way to spend a day - educational and cool. It is amazing how far we've come.
