A volcanic eruption is a magnificent spectacle, an experience like no other, so they said. I was ambivalent about a visit after missing out on the first 72 hours window following the triggering event. Quickly there formed a waiting list for a helicopter charter. The alternative – joining the throngs on foot – held little appeal. And every passing day brought thousands of new Instagram masterpieces into the world, extinguishing any lingering enthusiasm.
A few days ago we finally boarded a helicopter for the short hop to Geldingadalir. On the way in, the light of the low sun caressing the active craters was pure eye candy. On the ground, a couple of low circling helicopters rendered my drone sorties stressful and placed severe constraints on manoeuvrability. But you have to make chutney with the tomatoes you are dealt.
