Playkey.io ICO Review

If you follow my Blog a while you will notice that I have a dedication towards video games / eSports. As I am always on the hunt to find exciting and promising projects and ideas related to this area, I stumbled over Playkey.io.

PlayKey is a Cloud Gaming provider which aims to allow everyone to play the latest AAA games on every computer regardless of the equipment.

Computer equipment is very expensive, especially graphics cards, and many people are unable to afford this equipment. Nevertheless, there is a huge mass of people who want to enjoy new video games with the maximum graphics settings. This is where PlayKey comes with their cloud solution.

How does it work?

Players have to install the Playkey app on their computer, run it and choose a game they wish to play. In the next step, they will have to choose a server which fits their needs in terms of price, stability, capability and so on.

Miners (hardware providers) have to install the Playkey server software on their computer. Set up and run it, download games which are available via Playkey and start the production mode (mining).

Sounds very easy, doesn't it? It is, at least for the casual gamer. Of course, there are a lot of technical processes running in the background but this shouldn't bother you as long everything works as it should 😉.

I got a new computer recently so my setup is able to run the latest games properly. For now it doesn't make sense to test the product. I will try to get some impressions over the next week. If you have already tested the service please let me know how it works for you.

The PlayKey Ecosystem

Besides the Cloud Gaming Solution the projects follow several ideas to enrich they PlayKey Ecosystem:

• Game Development and Publishing
  Direct connection between all the publishers and game developers, and the platform;
  Publishing and crowd selling of games inside the Playkey Ecosystem;
  Support for indie developers through donations and stimulation by Playkey Foundation initiatives.

• Marketing Decentralization
  Large professional miners or regional miner communities can execute local marketing campaigns
  independently, including using their own mobile applications;
  CPA networks and YouTube bloggers can issue their smart contracts in which they would be paid
  for each client that they send to a miner’s server;
  Game selling promotions for publishers via smart contracts

• eSports and Live Streams
  Global and local gaming competitions via sponsorship, and additional services inside the Playkey
  ecosystems;
  Services for E-sport teams, and sponsorship smart contracts;
  “Play now” button for stream viewers to directly start playing with the streamer;
  Cross-subscription prices – customers buying a stream channel subscription receive a bonus
  for a cloud gaming subscription and vice versa;
  “Stream now” function for gamers to motivate them to stream directly from the cloud.

• Gaming Content Creation
  Game magazines and blogs with different monetization schemes via smart contracts inside
  the Playkey Ecosystem;
  YouTube streaming support via smart contracts with publishers and gamers;
  Game reviews or other content (video/text).

Competitors

There are already some competitors in this area

Vortex is probably the biggest competitor at the moment with an impressive amount of games available.
LiquidSky and Paperspace seems to be a little bit different but still already available.

We will see how it turns out in a few month, for sure PlayKey have to catch up quickly.
However, competition is always a good thing since it drives innovation and development.

My conclusion

7/10 Points

Pro's

• The team seems to be competent and all profiles are public (LinkedIn)
• They have a running product
• the idea is great and solves a huge pain of many gamers
• the Whitepaper looks great and is understandable

Con's

• The Token wouldn't be necessary since the product already works. Smells a little bit like collecting money.
• There are some discrepancies regarding ETH raised. The website says over 14k ETH, the wallet address shows way less.
