This is a nice passage of struggling out of home:
“Mailiw is an emotion. It does not really have good, firm equivalent in English. (…) ‘it’s your feeling of homesickness. That feeling in your stomach you get when you are away for too long, and it feels … wrong to you. And you want to see your place, your family and your friends again.”
People feel iliw, a state of longing for place and people left behind as a heaviness in the body (…). Gelade’s Ilokano defines iliw as longing, homesickness or nostalgia. Mailiw, the verb, means to remember with affection, to long for, to long to see, to visit, to be home sick, nostalgic.
Luis told me that the feeling of iliw is in the hearth and the head and he feels like crying when ‘having maililw’.
(Deirdre McKay, 2012).
Iliw/mailiw from Ilokano language looks like deeper in meaning from homesickness / homesick.
