Obligatory Happy New Year Post

in improv •  6 years ago

Welcome to another new year.. if you are still out and about, then make sure you get home safe..

Was chatting via discord with the friendly neighbourhood @wagonwheel people and got to chatting improv with one of them..

He-who-shall-remain-nameless by his request.. (just to honour his wishes of yes to passing it along, but no to full on quotes)

Turns out we both push the buttons on the machines that do the lights and sound for theatre (and mostly local comedy shows for me)

We talked longform.. It's a style that I admittedly called "A subgenre notorious for being self indulgent."
But you know.. when doing comedy it's tradition to lose money on anything related to the art
At least on the coming up in the game..

anyhoooo, we were talking since I was asking about signing up my Improv troupe for an account.. If it's the kind of thing that's acceptable here in Steem..

This is cause the comedy people, at least in Toronto, use FaceBlight to advert and promote events.. Yes, we post vids and pics of shows... but it's often to drum up support for upcoming shows..

So I wanted to ask.. just cause I don't want to create an account considered not part of the ecosystem..

Anywaysssss.. we got talking about bands um, sorry, I mean troupes

He mentioned a few of his favs... Catalyst and Dirty Disney
We got to one of his favs.. Drunk Shakespeare.

Seems at the beginning of the show they pull a name from a hat of one of the troupe members..
That lucky bastid starts drinking straight through the show.
As you can imagine, early on the shows gets um, goooood..

Toronto has a Shakespeare Troupe.. minus the drunk 'We Happy Few'
I mention it because if you get a chance to see someone take the piss out of a Shakespeare play it's often. welp.. gooooood.

Anyyyyyyyho, in their work, Puck is lost early.. or rather 'doomed' I think would be the Shakespearean word for it

So through that - we started jazz riffing on the schweet schweet sauce of life..

Iago: Good wine is a good familiar creature, if it be well used
from Othello

Dee: I had a buddhist teacher say something similar before one of those face to face transmission thangs..
We did a shot of sake and he said alcohol is both a poison and a medicine.

As my wagonwheel cohort's old Chemistry Prof would say: It turns out, Alcohol is a Solution!

Dee: It is. It definitely is.
To quote Homer: the cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems..

Long Story short - yes, please get home safe!!!

Assface: "Yah we do a few scenes find a hero and story line and then do a weird space aliens comic book geek fantasy version of it."

I would love to see a Drunken Shakespeare show. I especially like the element of it being a random character who gets drunk.

I picked this post to feature for the Pay It Forward Contest this week, so I hope your blog enjoys some extra attention!

Shakespeare done in improv is always fun.. but DRUNK! Shakespeare.. now that's falstalian!

thank you for thinking of me :D

I can't imagine Shakespeare improv. Iambic pentameter takes concentration!

Ha!

I think most people just fake the accent and come in as a ghost and kill their own father..

well that's exciting! Thanks for including me!

If there is a button, bell, or switch @scottf has to mess with it. His last day at one place he worked at he pushed this gian red button that drove him nuts for years. Haha.

This reminds me of that Ren and Stimpy bit where they have to protect the button that unravels the fabric of the universe..

Man, I would totally push that button..

Oh my gosh! Oh @enginewitty! This so sounds like you! Hahahahahhaa!

giphy (2).gif

you realize that button unravels ALL OF SPACE-TIME!!!!

That explains so much because that's when everything started going crazy.
