Talented are just a few, but skilled can be anyone

For playing the piano like Richard Clayderman or become seven times Formula 1 champion like Michael Schumacher did, you might need to be a gifted person although through hard work and dedication almost anything can be mastered. There are though some important skills that anyone can develop without no talent at all.

Being on time is one of time. It can be considered a skill because not many of us are always on time even for important meetings. Some blame that this is their way of being of loosing the track of time, but it's simply a habit. If you see it as a problem and channel your efforts towards solving it then it might become a skill. Setting some alarms or reminders throughout the day could help at the beginning.

Being optimistic can be sometimes contagious and considered a skill at the same time. Not everyone sees every journey or project already accomplished, but the ones who do that have much more chances to succeed than the ones doubting or even worse stamping it with "failed" from the first steps. Repeating affirmations to subconsciously convince ourselves "we can" is a good method to try.

Although optimism is an essential skill in accomplishing our goals it's very often not enough. Just repeating ourselves that we can do it won't get us anywhere without effort. Watching every video or interview with Arnold Schwarzenegger for example we'll notice him very often highlighting that his efforts were essential for him to win Mr.Universe multiple times. Without effort almost nothing can be accomplished. Effort=hard work.

Being flexible and teachable can be a valuable skill for our personal development and survival in the society. Refusing the new and clinging to old habits or strategies might anchor us in one place. Many people are facing the situation of changing their profession multiple times in a lifetime. I for example had to change six jobs in ten years from which three were completely new and had nothing to do with my qualification. That's how I learned to be teachable and flexible and value these skills at the same time.

There's of course the extra mile that Napoleon Hill talks about in his book Pathway to personal success. Being prepared to carry the glass with that last drop on it can be a skill that not everybody has. It can be developed however if we can find the passion to work and the purpose to push us through the extra mile. It's not an easy one, but it can be the most valuable.

After all, lets not forget to be kind and carrying not only to the ones close to us, but to others in need also. We don't have to love everybody, but we can show our appreciation or share some inspiring words to those who need it. It's not a perfect world the one we live in, but let's not make it worse by becoming selfish and cold with others around us. No one got poor by giving.

Quite often people fail to be on time because they are overly optimistic on how fast they can get to the meeting :)

Good point. Maybe in a future post about this kind of skills I should mention humor also :-)
