Warning: I know many of you would like to put several flags out this weekend, and maybe even gasp shoot some fireworks to exhibit your patriotism and love of country on its birthday (and the simple ideas on that birthing document which include the belief that the peaceful separation of peoples is, as a rule, a far better alternative to a war over who gets to make and enforce the rules), but please be increasingly careful about too ostentatious displays of patriotism during our ever-present crisis because you might unintentionally trigger some petulant wokesters who would like to believe that you’re committing nationalist micro-aggressions by exhibiting signs of your exclusivity and privilege which only reinforces your oppressive social construct and thereby exposes your neighbors to corrupting extremism.
Plus many people who are here, aren’t from here, and they don’t feel welcome here perhaps because they are noble refugees from a disadvantaged or war-torn country, or possibly expats pining for their homeland, or even undocumented citizens fleeing capture to escape deportation, and we certainly don’t want to offend them, because, well, you know, that would be awkward.
If you do decide to flaunt societal convention and brazenly put out your flags this weekend, please don’t post photos of them on social media ala FB, because then their poor workers will have spend their whole weekend slaving away sending out exposure notices to whomever you may have infected with your contagious extremist tactic, and we sincerely hope that they too get to enjoy their holiday weekend!
See where this goes?
Yes, we’ve come almost this far. Satire is almost indistinguishable from reality now. Comedy writes itself nowadays by blandly telling the facts.
We’ve been warned by people who’ve had an iron curtain closed around them. Some are still alive warning us, but many of us don’t wish to hear. They wave other flags.
To hell with that. I’m waving my country’s flag.
Happy birthday, ‘Murcia! -Sweet land of liberty.
