Today, India is celebrating Karva Chauth. Karva Chauth is a festival celebrated by Indian women for the safety and longevity of their husbands lives. Married women, to celebrate this festival fast from sunrise to moonrise.
This festival is celebrated in north India, in the States of Rajasthan, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. This festival is observed on the fourth day after full moon, in the Hindu month of Kartik.
How does it start?
Women, prior to Karva Chauth start buying cosmetics, jewels, heena and other items for the festival. Market shops are also decorated and community is filled with vibrant energy.
Rituals
Women on this day fast for the entire day which begins at dawn, in traditional observances they don't even do any household work. Women apply henna and other cosmetics on each other. The day is spent in community meeting, exchange of bangles in form of gifts can also be observed.
In the evening, women gather to read and listen the Karva Chauth katha. When moon comes out and becomes visible arka is given to moon. It's customary for a fasting woman to see moon's reflection in a vessel filled with water, with her husband by her side.
Now wife turns to her husband and looks at his face in the same manner.
Now husband takes water from the tali and gives his wife first sip along with first morsel of the day and with this fast is broken.
