Diwali, festival of lights and polluted nights.

Diwali is a festival that has a lot of misconceptions around it. A big misconception about Diwali is that it is the only festival in the world that can also referred to as “The festival of lights”. Hannukah - a very important Jewish festival is also called the festival of lights. Other festivals of light are Tazaungdaing festival, Saint Lucy's Day, Lantern Festival of China or the Berlin Festival of Lights.

Apparently most people don’t even know how to wish each other on Diwali. Apparently the prime minister of Canada wrote “Diwali Mubarak” instead of the usual Happy Diwali.

Hey, wait a minute Happy is an English word, isn’t it? Or… Is it a Sanskrit word?

Anyways, it is really unfair to blame Justin Trudeau over a tweet that was probably written and posted by an intern.

Another Common misconception about Diwali is that, on Diwali the lights from all over in India can be seen from the space. Yes, if any of you were forwarded one of these images in your whatsapp groups, then I must say it's fake because we have the real picture and this is how it really looked like this year.

But in all seriousness, my most favorite and subtle Diwali wish came from Pornhub

Not a SINGLE Indian felt offended. Very subtle and very very nice Pornhub.

Moving on, Supreme court banned the sale of crackers in New Delhi and NCR to control the pollution. While some people are happy about the ban which is definitely going to help the one thing everybody in the world cares about - you know “Staying Alive”
Here is how the media reported it:

Ewwwwww.

Its surprising how we deal with news these days!

Supreme Court’s decision to ban the sale of fireworks in Delhi has been largely successful and here’s how Delhi celebrated Diwali.

The ground reality of the cracker ban seems to be totally different, and the Air quality index hit 999 microns in certain parts of Delhi, which is 10 times the safe value and is very hazardous to breathe. At that rate, even sticking your head outside the exhaust of a blue line bus is probably more safer. What the week wants to bring your attention to an alarming new trend that has started in India.

Every Diwali, hotel bookings around the cities in Delhi go up. It is almost like an exodus. Here is what sales manager of a hotel from Jaipur had to say about this:

"Most of the bookings are for families coming with kids and elderlies. This is a new season for the hospitality industry," Piyush Sharma, a sales manager at Sarovar Group of Hotels

It’s true, people who can afford to leave Delhi at the time are leaving in such large numbers that public transport companies are operating luxury buses at full capacity from Delhi.

For the first time in the year, the phrase “Delhi se hoon bc “ is not something to be proud of.
While the ban wasn’t very successful, there were some notable personalities who opposed it in first place. Here’s what famous Indian author Chetan Bhagat had to say about it.:

Yes, as if his books haven’t caused enough damage already: his tweets have also started dividing Indians into two groups - ones who believe that reading 5 Point someone was one of the 3 mistakes of their, or otherwise.

The point is, it is very important to understand that the Young India does not want to see Phooljari, Bomb and Rocket, but first of all want and deserve a healthy life.

And of all the people Chetan Bhagat does not seem to know which is ironic because he wrote a book about it:

BTW, I don’t mean to scare you too much, but Chetan Bhagat also has a brother called Ketan Bhagat who is also a writer, so good luck.

YES, the supreme court has taken the right step by banning the sale of firecrackers. But if this is how people are looking at it, then I believe someone needs to give out the right message and tell the truth as well. So ladies and gentlemen, What the Week presents reporting on Diwali the right way.
